To be fair to Emery and now Ljungberg, defensively we were undercooked badly last season, and even worse this season with Bellerin, Holding and Tierney still struggling with fitness. Saliba not yet here.

Club governance is now a delicate balance. Even the coaching names most would offer as the best ... Guardiola and Klopp ... work within a leadership system and need to convince and work with other e-level colleagues.

@clivepafc Agree, and that's my point. But the 'bounce' was part of the rationale for sacking Emery now ... rather than when an alternate head coach and coaching team was ready (which may be at the end of the season depending on the target).

The fan base (and podcasts) are so emotional.

@GuillemBalague A really welcome measured summary of what has happened. All head coaches need a bit of luck to go their way, Emery badly needed his team to win in the Europa League or gain the CL placing. When they didn't, he was up against the negativity within the fanbase. @clivepafc

Manchester City took the long view in the recruitment of their head coach ... their target was Guardiola ... and they got there, but over time.

Is there a long term coaching target? Is it Nagelsmann?
Could Ancelotti and Ljungberg lead the emergence of a new team over the next 2 years.

Can we hit our immediate priorities with the existing coaching team?
If not, what is the succession plan?
These are questions answered calmly ... the opposite of podcast/fan hyperbole.

At the executive level you need to distance yourself from the noise of the fan base ... take the pulse periodically ... during the Nov international break and the new year. You let reason shape your understanding ... and when apt you act.

What can we learn from Watford result? What we already knew ... it’s only match day 5, and we need to see what happens when the fullbacks return to the side. Holding should challenge for the role currently filled by Luis.
Then there is a platform and it’s up to the coach.
