Last weekend’s Fish & Ships Festival was a great success thanks to all the local businesses, residents and visitors who got involved, including of course, Whitby’s very special heritage and art museums.

Our Station flag is at half mast today as we pay our respects to much loved volunteer Barrie Lazenby who sadly passed away recently. Barrie ran the RNLI shop in Whitby for several years, contributing to its success as one of the country’s highest earning RNLI shops. RIP Barrie.
As it’s #worldbookday here’s a sneak peak of our best kept secret! Located upstairs at the #MuseumofWhitbyJet is our gemstone and jewellery library. The library is free to be enjoyed by all, but please note, booking is required in advance.

OTD 1946 Whitby RNLB MaryAnn Hepworth was launched to aid MFV Easter Morn as she entered the harbour in a northerly storm. A huge wave had washed a crewman into the sea, crewman Harland entered the water and rescued the man. For this act Harland was awarded the RNLIs Silver Medal
OTD 1861 Whitby Lifeboat with Coxswain John Storr (pictured) at the helm capsized in the 'Great Storm' whilst attempting to rescue shipwrecked sailors. Of the 13 man crew only one survived. Today we remember the 12 Lifeboatmen who gallantly give their lives on that fateful day.

On display at #WhitbyMuseum is this WWI bronze memorial plaque to Pte Wilfred Harrison, who lived at Cleveland Terrace, Whitby.
The plaque came with its associated paperwork and a newspaper cutting about Wilfred’s funeral, which gives an interesting insight into his short life.
