Warming up is 100% necessary. That being said, it is important to choose a piece that focuses on getting the lips ready to play:a piece the instrumentalists can play in a comfortable range. Example of what not to play is a piece that has trumpets play above C5
Quotation: “Unless music in education is based firmly upon first hand practical experience the education offered will only be ‘about’ music, not of it. If music is to justify its existence as a curriculum subject it must offer something unique and valuable.”(Phil Ellis 1987)
The band staff also calls the percussion section “drummers” all the time, which also drives me crazy. Percussionists, do you have a preference as to what you want your section called. It’s nuances like this that just show the unprofessionalism in the band staff
This band camp I am working for doesn’t count in 8s. They go “9,10,11,12...17,18,19” and so on. It makes me cringe every time and the kids are never together when counting.
