My sister’s husband, a Kano man, left the market city of Kano for a promised greener pasture in Libya. He is one of the few people who survived the perilous journey to Libya. However, throughout his 18 months stay, he couldn’t get a job. He couldn’t send a Kobo to his wife back home.

Even when the wife ( my sister) was gravely ill. He couldn’t afford to come back home to see her or their two children. he only told us he is trapped. That time, I don’t even know what that means. I only threatened to take her back home. However, elders intervened.

Long story short, she passed on while he’s away. Neighbours got to know of her death only when the children were heard crying incessantly. The house’s door had to be broken into, her soulless body lying still and stiff in the middle of the parlour.

When he finally made it back home, her remains were rested in the grave. To this day—3 years later, I cannot find it in my heart to forgive him. The immense sadness that unfortunate loss visited on me, I am yet to recover. I dislike the man. I don’t think I will ever forgive or forget.

She’s the best of us. Innocent. Young. And beautiful. She only wanted to be a dutiful wife to her husband. She refused to tell us about the journey. She refused to expose the harsh reality of living without a breadwinner to any of her family. I only got to know her difficult situation when I visited her unannounced. Something told me to go to Kano from Sokoto, unannounced. I wanted to surprise my little sister. However, I got surprised. The condition I saw her then, I shed a tear.

Ya Allah, even talking about this incident is overwhelming me with sadness and anger.

May your soul rest in peace Ummi. Insha Allah, your good heart and deeds will intercede for you. Insha Allah.

It is often said that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

Back in 2016 and 2017, the 8th Senate, under my leadership, rejected Ibrahim Magu’s nomination as substantive EFCC Chairman not once but twice. Still, he remained in office illegally until July 2020, without confirmation by the Senate.

At the time, some called our decision political. It wasn’t. We were simply exercising our constitutional duty and standing by what was right. My colleagues in the 8th Senate and I, as well as our families and associates, endured what I can only describe as attempts by Magu to terrorise us. Doing what was right came at a huge personal and public cost.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal ruled that Magu’s prolonged tenure as acting EFCC Chairman was indeed unlawful.

Nearly a decade later, I feel vindicated yet again.

For those of us who have had the privilege of serving this nation, the deepest lesson in all of this is that time may test one’s conviction, but it always ultimately reveals the value of standing on principle.

The total donation we received from this app for these students is ₦230,500.

The initial plan was to enroll all three children in government schools, but I decided to take the eldest, who is going into JSS1, to an affordable private school within walking distance from their home.

The second child, who is deaf, had outstanding school fees. I have cleared the fees and paid for his registration and uniform. The youngest, who is going into Primary 3, will continue in government school, and I have also covered his registration and uniform.

I have purchased the necessary school materials for all three children and contacted the nearest Islamic school, where they will also be enrolled.

I also used part of the donation to purchase dozens of books to be distributed to other students within the community.
