Most commentators are still watching credit spreads.

Here is what they are missing:

I saw 2008 in the debt numbers. American private debt was 150% of GDP by 2005. The growth of credit peaked at the equivalent of 15% of GDP in 2006. I said that rate could not be sustained. When the level of private debt stopped rising, credit did not just slow. It turned negative, down to minus 5% of GDP in 2009.

That is what caused the downturn.

This time the trigger is supply, then debt service. Households pay mortgages out of wages. Firms pay corporate debt out of profits. Until the war, that was just about feasible. Close the Strait of Hormuz and you do not only lose oil. You lose fertilizer for American crops, helium for MRI machines and high-tech lines, and about half the world’s sulfuric acid. Sour crude from the Persian Gulf is where that sulfur comes from. No sulfuric acid, no copper. No copper, data centers and a long list of factories stall. Volume falls faster than price can save you. Then the interest cannot be paid.

Energy and output move one for one. I plotted energy from the IEA against gross world product from the World Bank in Ravel©. They sit on the same line. A 4% rise in one is a 4% rise in the other. COVID proved it in reverse. Mainstream models treat energy as about 4% of GDP, so a 10% energy shock becomes a 0.4% story. That is not the real world. A 10% fall in energy availability implies a 10% fall in gross world product. You cannot put more workers in the petrol tank.

This is more a marker, and I will have to re-visit it tomorrow or in another day as I'm feeling a bit discombobulated after a shingle's vaccination yesterday.

I think people are over-thinking the climate and ecological crisis.

At heart the problem is quite simple.

1) Our climate is rapidly warming due to the burning of fossil fuels and mass livestock farming. The motivation is very simple, very rich people, billionaires and giant megacorporations, are making vast profits from this.

2) Our natural ecosystems and biodiversity are being systematically destroyed by the same vested interests, doing it to make themselves vastly wealthier.

Using their control of the media, they convince people with false arguments, blatant sophistry, that they are doing this for the benefit of humanity. That if we didn't burn fossil fuels, destroy natural habitat, that we'd be living in dire poverty. But the gap between rich and poor is massively growing as is the wealth of billionaires.

There is a propaganda myth amongst the right, that the WEF etc, have been trying to foist climate solutions onto the public, or even created a lie of climate change. In fact, the billionaires, which include the WEF have been obstructing real climate action and have been trying to foist false solutions onto the public, and to make the public pay for them with taxes. The people who need to pay for climate action, are the billionaires of the WEF, not ordinary people.

At heart, both the problems and the solutions are clear. Stop destroying out planetary natural support systems for billionaire and corporate profits.

Over analysing the cause of climate change, won't stop it, nor will over analysing the causes of biodiversity loss. The causes and solutions are clear.

For instance, we knew how to address the climate crisis 40 years ago. Phase out fossil fuel burning, phase out mass livestock burning, and eliminate great inequality between the rich and the poor, where the billionaires harvest huge profits and wealth from destroying our natural support systems. They are not doing it for us, but to make themselves even richer.

It is possible for all to lead comfortable lives, but not for the rich to live grossly extravagant lifestyles, and to create monster carbon emissions.

In his presentations, Professor Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate used to use a simple metric. If the top 10% just reduced their emissions to that of the average European, not say the average Ghanian, that would reduce global carbon emissions by 30%. and put us well on target for holding warming to 1.5C

MIT mathematically proved that AI will destroy the democracy.

A Nobel-winning MIT economist published a terrifying paper called "Automation and Repression"

As AI and automation replace human labor, wealth concentrates heavily in the hands of a tiny group of capital owners. Inequality skyrockets.

When inequality hits a critical mass, workers realize they are being crushed and the threat of a popular revolt spikes.

Faced with that threat, the ruling elite are forced to make a choice.

They can redistribute the wealth through taxes, or they can use force to keep people down.

The paper mathematically proves a dark reality: there is a direct, inescapable link between automation and political repression.

The more capital accumulates through AI, the more the elite prefer repression over redistribution.

Why? Because sharing the wealth cuts into their power. Funding a police state protects it.

It gets worse.

The authors modeled what happens when an economy starts inside a clean, stable democracy.

As automation advances and capital concentrates at the top, the math shows that the elite eventually find democracy to be a liability.

They stop supporting democratic systems. They back a coup. They install a repressive system just to protect their automated wealth.

Nobody is voting to end democracy.

The technology’s economic incentives just make authoritarian control the logical next step for survival.
