A month later Tunisia flared up due to a street vendor setting himself on fire, president Ben Ali had to run to Saudi.

One of the worst massacres on this date in 1971 at Sohagpur village by the Pakistan Army and Al-Badr a Razakar outfit, so terrible was it that Sohagpur became a "village of widows".

The village was located in Sherpur district, considered strategtically important by both the Pakistan Army and Mukti Bahini due to it's location near the border, close to Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

Around 245 residents were massacred by the Army in the villages of Sohagpur, Benupara and Kakorkandi, aided by local Razakar collaborators Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, Chairman Fassi, Nazir Master, Doctor Kader, Bollu Boka Bura and Nasa.

The village was surrounded by a 150 strong army from all 3 sides, when the males were away in the paddy fields. The army began to fire away, and by 9 AM around 150 were dead. Males were shot or bayoneted to death in front of their families, women were sexually assaulted.

None of the males in Sohagpur survived the massacre as it became a "village of widows". The Razakars, Al-Badr forces declared the dead as Kafirs, prevented the burial of the bodies. Many of the corpses were eaten by wild animals.

George Mutholil: Remember the Name and the Face

India will hear a lot about George Mutholil, aka MK George, in the near future. Most of it will not be flattering. He's a Jesuit priest. He was the former Principal of Loyola College of Social Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram. Currently, he serves as Regional Assistant for South Asia and General Counselor to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus in Rome.

He has a problem. He doesn't like the new FCRA bill. He wants to prevent it from becoming an act at ANY COST. Hence, he's doing his best to ensure the bill doesn't get passed. - I used to generally leave office late in the evening from Churchgate.
- On this day, wasn't feeling well and decided to leave early.
- But due to bad stomach pain, came back to office from Churchgate station.
- Half and hour later, heard the tragic news.
- 189 people were killed and over 800 were injured.

(2) August 2007 - Hyderabad bomb blast

- I used to stay in Sindhi Colony with my batchmates, not very far from the lakefront lumbini park and Gokul Chat bhandar.
- It was weekend but for some unknown reason, we decided not to go to Gokul chat and later, even dropped the plan to go the lakefront.
- In the evening, my phone range...a cousin inquired how was I doing, and If was OK. He informed me about the bomb blast in these places. My parents were desperately trying to reach me but could not. I called them later.
- 32 people died at Gokul Chat and 10 to 12 people died at Lumbini Park; about 68 people sustained injuries.
- It became a running joke in my family that wherever I relocate to, the city faces terrorist attack!
