So this just happened...our first newsletter!
Thanks to our team for putting this together AND being the backbone that enabled us to create the content.
The little organization that could packs quite a punch in retrospect...
Congratulations to @SkanskaUSA.
That said, we would love to see/hear how they'll make a meaningful and transparent effort to include #mwbe contractor participation on this project.

A great piece outlining the challenging landscape of encouraging and supporting #mwbe participation on projects. Many opinions reflected, but it seems the consensus is that reform is much needed.

Our executive director, @KennethJThomas, opines in @CrainsNewYork, on how legislation can have unintended consequences for #mwbe contractors.

@turner_talk--this is an important focus that should be reproduced throughout the industry. Credit to your company and your CEO.

"Spending on construction in the city is poised to hit an all-time high of $86 billion this year, according to a report from the @NYBCA"

Some of the MWCDA team attended the NYC M/WBE Forum in Albany last week.
They had a great time convening and collaborating with other organizations, agencies and advocates that collectively share a passion and commitment to advancing #mwbe firms.
The measure raises questions about whether there will be enough such professionals to go around, and whether affordable housing construction — which is already slumping — could be stunted further."

The affordable housing sector, is arguably where the most opportunities reside for M/WBE firms.
To that end, constrictions on development are a concern.
This is why we have the "W" in MWCDA.
Advocating for a more inclusive construction industry, on both the workforce front and the contractor front, is essential for its continued viability.

Here's an incredible example of what the #Grow2Green initiative is capable off.
Not only is the recycling and repurposing of construction materials in effect, but also supporting marginalized communities, while encouraging inclusion in the construction industry.
As an organization that supports #mwbe construction contractors, we've identified that the issue is less about "knowing" how to access city contracts and more about not having the capacity to bid--then execute on these contracts.

For any #mwbe contractors interested in hearing more (notably, an information session on August 16th) and determining if you qualify, do feel free to follow up with us: [email protected].
Whenever we consider potential collaborations to both support #mwbe contractors and create opportunities for them, we always ask ourselves, "does this makes sense?"
The @MTA's Small Business Development Program does.

Given the institution's understanding that more needs to be done to support this community, we're collaborating with the MTA to source companies that stand to benefit from this program on offer.
