Our time on this planet is tragically brief, so don't let life pass you by while you're chasing a career. Go out and have fun, make memories, and hold on to your loved ones.
Tomorrow is my first day as an assistant professor. I thought I'd reach this milestone with joy and excitement, but those feelings have been seriously dimmed after the unexpected death of my father last month. It's difficult to find joy in anything when you're grieving
As a student I was once told if I wasn't thinking about my research 24/7 then I probably wasn't going to make it in academia. This is absolutely false and downright harmful advice. You are allowed to have a life outside your work; you don't have to be defined by your job
@aarolsen Iβm sorry you experienced this. But thank you for sharing; it made me feel less alone π. I identify with some of what youβve described. Feel free to reach out if you want someone to talk to about it.
I'm very excited to announce that I'll be joining the Department of Biological Science at Cal State Fullerton as an assistant professor this August!!! @csufbio@csuf
Stay tuned for info for student researchers interested in all things muscle and movement!!!
The burden should not be on students to learn the hidden curriculum of academia. The burden should be on departments and individual faculty to remove the hidden curriculum!
If you are a PI or on an admissions committee, what do you do when you see an application from a student who didn't contact you already? And if you do anything besides speak with that student to learn more about each other and provide information, why is that?
Just a reminder that although many students thinking about graduate school may not know what's in that "black box" of secrets (how to get a mentor, how to apply, how to get funding), there are many more who don't even know the black box exists.
We all need to do better. A π§΅
New paper out with @JohnRHutchinson! 3D imaging of six fossil brittle stars shows critical elements missing for musculoskeletally-driven motion, revealing key steps in the evolution of modern-day brittle star locomotion.

Movement performance can be robust to changes in temperature when organisms replace chemical processes with mechanical ones. Read all about it in this new paper in @J_Exp_Biol by myself and Steve Deban! And check out our presentation at #SICB2021!

Conversation between myself and two assistant professors at #SICB2021 :
"I'm pretty sure these BSP finalists are smarter than me."
"Same. I feel like these students are doing so much more than I have done or can do"
"How in the world are they good at EVERYTHING?!"
Anyone else concerned about copyright law and fair use with #sicb2021's online format? I want to show some footage of animal behaviors that only exists in copyrighted material. Normally fine in a transient presentation, but in a video posted online for two months...
