@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith I can and do play retail, it's fun and there are millions playing it too.
12 million in Wrath and they left long before most changes even occurred; and was more because of Lich King hype and Cataclysm expectations that fell short
3-5M*
People moved on or couldn't accept change
@ThorThunderdog@DarkLeafCoven I assume that'd be the intent, just curious how well it'll turn out since plenty of abilities were strongly built around the Celestials.
@PerpetuallyEvie@DarkLeafCoven Possible, although given a lot of classic players views on "Pandaland" I kinda doubt they'd want to actually touch Pandaren.
I even remember someone posting about how players were already attacking Pandaren and wanting them to stay the 'April fools joke they were meant to be'.
@ChaosCookies33@DarkLeafCoven Given how a lot of people absolutely hated the mere IDEA of "Pandaland" I really don' think Forever is going to risk Pandaria again.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Every single retail player I know tested out classic as well for a little bit at least. Just like most are looking to try Forever, so no you haven't established anything.
And without retails success, classic servers wouldn't have existed. No Retail success, no classic. Period.
@RoseyNick@ManiakSmith@RasterbIath "Beginning of the end" and you're talking about the peak popularity for a game that has continued for decades after with millions playing and was and is the most successful MMORPG in history.
What does that make every single other MMO before and during WoW? π
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Wow, a million players not paying for private servers, totally obvious they'd return to classic servers for long term and not just quit like they did last time if the game changed.
This is just going in circles and boring now.
Retail success --> Classic existing.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith WoW's success led them to want to development MORE games in the IP.
Without it, they'd have gone into hibernation until they could come up with a Warcraft 4 like the gap between Starcraft Brood War and 2, or Diablo 2 and 3.
They wouldn't have just said "let's make classic!".
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Retails success obviously HAD an impact as classic wow would never have existed if retail wasn't a success.
Servers would have shut down and classic wouldn't have existed. Period.
End of story. Stop wasting my time.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith And if I and millions of others didn't pay, you wouldn't have Classic servers, you wouldn't have Forever.
Maybe Warcraft 4, or maybe it'd just go into stasis for decades like the gap between other blizzard franchises.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith The entire purpose of a game is to make money, if Retail wasn't making money, it would have shut down, there's no reason to think any Classic servers would be a cash cow - even with existing evidence it pales to retail or matches at best.
I pay Blizzard because game is fun.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Of course them sticking around matters, the game wouldn't exist without them.
If the game wasn't successful, they wouldn't have just tried older versions, bud. They would have moved on to Warcraft 4 or something else.
@SDLakersfan75@ManiakSmith@RasterbIath "The beginning of the end" and it was when they reached the peak to a game that went on to still be played by millions decades later and is still the most successful MMORPG - currently and historically.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Nothing wrong with choosing to leave if you aren't enjoying the game. But without retail players continuing to play, server would have shut down and classic servers would have never existed.
Without WoW's continuing success, they wouldn't have made classic servers. No Forever.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith The thing is, if we HADN'T given them money, they would have shut down. They would've have expanded to classic servers let alone forever.
WoW's continuing success led to them being willing to expand.
Not giving them money doesn't mean you would have gotten anything, ever.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Your math is based off the assumption that those classic players stuck around after the hype wore off, and based off all evidence - they didn't.
Recent estimates show a 2:1 base for retail:classic, and it's possibly even lower now (til Forever). Though they're just estimates. π€·ββοΈ
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Forever might actually be able to be comparable to retail in retention if they keep it up and don't change it enough to upset people like across actual history.
And I'm all for hoping that the extreme toxicity we've seen on here is not going to be reflected in game.
@rubmywrinklz@RasterbIath@ManiakSmith Retails have 20 years of investment and they enjoy the game as well as sunken cost fallacy, the important part is they stick with the game.
Classic players don't have that, and are willing to ditch when they want just like before.
Retail is the consistent cash cow, not classic.
