WHY Sandro Tonali Could Be The Engine Of Spurs’ Midfield…

Sandro Tonali isn’t the traditional holding midfielder many Tottenham fans might expect.

And that’s exactly why he’d be such an interesting fit for Roberto De Zerbi.

Tonali thrives in high-intensity football. He’s constantly scanning, covering huge distances and looking to play forward rather than simply recycle possession. His athleticism and ability to break lines make him the type of midfielder who can inject tempo into every phase of the game.

That’s why he feels less like a conventional number six and more like the engine of the midfield.

Alongside someone like Mateus Fernandes, Spurs would have two technically gifted midfielders capable of progressing the ball through pressure and accelerating attacks from deep.

There is a trade-off, though.

Neither Tonali nor Fernandes is a specialist defensive anchor. Tonali can struggle aerially and isn’t at his best defending large spaces in one-versus-one situations, meaning Spurs would still need the right structure around them.

If De Zerbi gets that balance right, the midfield could become one of the most exciting in the Premier League.

And while a £100m fee sounds enormous, the Telstar Transfer Index shows it would still sit just below Gazza’s move when adjusted for football inflation.
