This unity takes place in the context of Iran’s continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi threats to shut down the Bab al Mandab Strait to commercial shipping, and U.S.-Saudi joint operations against Iran-aligned militias in Iraq. Global action and consensus are key to building pressure against the Iranian regime and to supporting a diplomatic solution to end the war.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed Syria’s foreign policy over the weekend and expressed openness to developing a security agreement with Israel that considers Syria’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Although Israel is unlikely to hand over the Golan Heights, this is a promising development building on increasing diplomatic engagement in the Levant, including trilateral diplomacy between Israel and Lebanon that could help foster peace and stability. It also signals Syria’s shift away from Iran and its proxies and creates opportunities to further integrate Damascus into the region. ‼️ New: President Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun agreed to launch discussions toward a bilateral U.S.–Lebanon security agreement aimed at establishing a durable framework for long-term strategic cooperation.

Sources told me that, beyond this significant outcome and the agreement to pursue the re-establishment of direct flights between the United States and Lebanon, the visit also yielded:

• Expand U.S. military assistance and capabilities support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, reinforcing their role as Lebanon’s sole legitimate national defense institution.

• Explore options for post-UNIFIL monitoring and verification arrangements, including the possibility of extending or adapting the current UNIFIL mandate.
