This is one of those defensive holding calls the deep officials have to see. It impacts speed, rhythm, and footwork, likely causing the QB to unnecessarily work progressions.
Same logic in HS, but lower levels can expect more “alignment help.” By HS varsity the WRs should be able to legally align independently.
Note: LOS Officials shouldn’t literally tell a WR to move FWD/BWD. That could lead to false starts & illegal formations.
When officiating the line of scrimmage, general philosophy is not to be overly technical and split hairs over very minor infractions (such as a receiver's hand slightly breaking the LOS). However, when an infraction is so egregious and obvious, a flag has to be thrown.
Kadarius Toney is blatantly lined up offside and in the neutral zone. You rarely see an offsides penalty on the offense, but that is not because this play in #BUFvsKC isn't a foul.
It is because a receiver rarely lines up offsides.
@CoachDanCasey Illegal if using HS rules from NFHS. That’s kick catching interference. The ball must go 10 yards AND touch the ground before the kicking team can touch it.
@SportRefGripes Some states don’t work that way. In Alabama, if that were to happen, the local association would likely face repercussions from the state office, and potentially be unable/unsanctioned to officiate games affiliated with the state organization.
@HSFootballRules This rule should be emphasized reading. Every year a coach takes a TO thinking it buys a player back in, and then goes ballistic when told otherwise.
This is a very poor perspective on officiating. Official abuse is not OK simply because the game is over. If you hadn’t noticed, there is a nation-wide official shortage, and this treatment is precisely why.
Do better @Outkick.
When does it end? When there are no officials? Then what? Everyone needs to realize we are at a turning point. Many officials are quitting, and it’s getting more difficult to find new officials in all sports.
