Why is Mizoram’s apex student body opposing the full version of Vande Mataram?

A debate over #VandeMataram has emerged in #Mizoram, with the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the state’s apex student organisation, opposing any move to make the singing or playing of all stanzas compulsory in educational institutions.

MZP has raised concerns over religious references in the stanzas beyond the second and said compulsory participation could #conflict with the beliefs of many students in Mizoram. The organisation has also urged the Centre to consider the Northeast’s distinct cultural and socio-religious context.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lalduhoma had earlier stated that only the first two stanzas would be accepted for official and educational purposes. The Aizawl district education officer also instructed schools to sing only the first and second stanzas during the #HarGharTiranga campaign.

#Naga civil society groups on Friday, August 14, demanded immediate action against those responsible for the killing of two civilians and injuries to two others in an ambush at Langka Naga village in #Manipur’s #Kangpokpi district, alleging the involvement of a Kuki National Front (KNF) group.

The attack took place around 7.30 am when farmers were working in paddy fields, according to sources. More than 40 armed men carrying sophisticated weapons allegedly attacked the farmers.

The deceased were identified as W Chawang, 34, and Kawidinang Abonmai, 55. Both sustained gunshot wounds and died at the spot.
