Lazarus Edward Ekwueme, also known as Laz Ekwueme, is indeed a trailblazer in Nigerian music. Born on January 28, 1935, he's a renowned musicologist, composer, scholar, actor, and traditional ruler. Ekwueme is credited with pioneering African Art Music, blending Western classical forms with indigenous rhythms and languages.
He's had an impressive career, serving as a professor at the University of Lagos, founding the Laz Ekwueme National Chorale, and coordinating the Nigerian National Choir at FESTAC 77. Ekwueme's compositions, like "Missa Africana" and "A Night in Bethlehem," showcase his unique style.
As the Igwe of Oko Kingdom, he's dedicated to cultural preservation and community development. His contributions have earned him numerous honors, including the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) and Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
