As I arrived to paint today I saw a little boy and his teacher staring at the mural. She explained to me that when he’s good & earns a reward, he asks for a few minutes to just look at it.🥺 My heart exploded again, as it has so many times with these kids at @mosesybeach school.
I really wish y’all could see this in person. For reference I’m 6’1 (1.85m) tall and these sea creatures dwarf me. Moses Y Beach School is pre-K to 2nd grade, so the kids are pretty small. From the vantage point of a child’s eyes they must seem absolutely gigantic.

How it started. How it ended.
Public art and planting trees are a simple recipe for community beautification. Deep gratitude and thanks to @NewHavenURI for planting a white oak and a sweetgum tree on the block in front of the Bouchet mural.

Honored to have Congresswoman @rosadelauro Congressman @jahimes & State Rep @Porter4DaPeople speaking on the importance of investment in the $1 trillion Infrastructure Bill during a press conference this morning in front of Mothers, Daughters, & Sisters of the Firelight.
Day 13: See that tiny patch of grass in the bottom right corner of this photo? I requested a scarlet oak tree to be planted there in Dr Bouchet’s memory from the @NewHavenURI through their amazing free tree program. Public art and planting trees radically change public spaces.

Sneak peek detail of Day 12 on the Dr Edward Alexander Bouchet mural. Painting that lettering was definitely a labor of love. Ran out of gold paint for the frame and had to travel :45 minutes to get fresh can. Happy 169th Birthday to this brilliant man! #BouchetDay
Day 11: Gargantuan thanks to the kids from Squash Haven who volunteered their time to collaborate on painting the Dr Edward Alexander Bouchet mural with me today. 🙏🏾
Day 10 of painting: Friday I will be partnering with kids from Squash Haven who will help me fill in the background for this collaborative mural. Squash Haven trains New Haven youth in after school programs to be monsters in squash for greater access to ivy athletic scholarships.
Esteemed luminaries: I give you Day 9 of the progress on the Dr Edward Alexander Bouchet mural project. Currently studying 19th century typesetting fonts for the upcoming lettering for the black background. Completion is slated for September 15th, Dr Bouchet’s birthday.
Thanks to @ainissaramirez for this fantastic article on the Dr. Edward Alexander Bouchet mural! The first black person to receive a PhD in the United States should absolutely be common knowledge; at least in New Haven where he was born, educated, and died. https://t.co/cadnJlbqxm
Distinguished Guests: I present to you the completed socially distant masked collaborative mural project at Edgewood Magnet School in New Haven-
