I wrote about how @mandy_mclaren & I investigated reading instruction failures in MA for @thegrade_ Hopefully this helps other reporters cover this difficult, complicated & vital topic. It was the most rewarding work I’ve done in my career. https://t.co/BtBilhvV3p
Massachusetts is launching effort to improve adolescent literacy interventions, believed to be first of its kind in US. This comes after our literacy series revealed the devastating impact of reading failure on thousands of teens https://t.co/pbnocgmZUW https://t.co/eieuBC7nyK
“We have to treat each other like we are God’s children, no matter what religion, what background &appreciate each other’s worth & listen to each other & not fight & kill & hate.” thanks for telling my grandma’s Holocaust survival story @MaddieKhaw https://t.co/i6cwNjc8WE

Such a good read!
"Garcia is unsure what else to do about her girls’ reading troubles. She sees the families she cooks and launders for — their kids are always reading.
The thought of hiring one hadn’t crossed her mind until a reporter asked about it..."

@ehanford@mandy_mclaren@BostonGlobe Thank you, @ehanford - your reporting opened my eyes and so many others’ to this issue so I have a lot of appreciation for you and your work.
Thank you @NaomiMartin - far and away the hardest hitting article on reading @BostonGlobe has published so far. It comes hard at Chicopee, but you could have found a Sterling in any district in Massachusetts.
It also comes at me indirectly. I’m a policymaker who doesn’t focus on adolescent illiteracy very much. I intentionally stay focused on early literacy. I’m not sure I’m wrong doing that, but this article leaves me with a lot to process this morning.
NEW: With literacy an ascendant education issue in MA and across the U.S., the discussion is centered on early elementary. But what about the teens who struggle to even read a text message?

Our 4th story in investigative series out now: Kids who can’t read well & don’t get proper help in school don’t disappear. They become teens/adults excluded from much of society: ballots, leases, drivers license tests, job applications. Inside their lives https://t.co/pbnocgmZUW
