The family tree in The Apothecary Diaries is not a family tree anymore, It is a political crime scene.

Maomao was raised by Luomen, but her biological parents are Lakan and Fengxian.

Lakan’s disappearance and Fengxian’s tragic response created the story behind Maomao’s birth, while Lahan became Lakan’s adopted son.

Then Jinshi’s identity makes the imperial family even messier. He is not actually a eunuch.

He is officially the Emperor’s younger brother, while the story strongly hints at a hidden birth exchange involving Ah-Duo, the former Emperor, and Empress Dowager Anshi.

The Shi clan adds another layer. Loulan and Suirei are connected through the same family, but the identity of “Shisui” is not as simple as the palace believes.

The name was used as part of a larger plan to move through the rear palace unnoticed.

That is what makes the series so addictive. Every relationship is personal, but every secret is also political.

A romance can affect succession.
A family tragedy can become a rebellion. And a servant’s identity can change the entire balance of the palace.
