On 17 July 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, a Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRD), was flying at 33,000 ft over eastern Ukraine when it was destroyed by a 9N314M warhead carried by a 9M38-series Buk surface-to-air missile.

The Dutch Safety Board concluded that no other scenario could explain the aircraft's destruction. The investigation also found that the risks posed by the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine were not adequately recognised, and the airspace should have been closed as a precaution.
