I just called the president as he responds to Iranβs missile launch on Israel.
He said he couldnβt talk now, but added: βthings are going very well.β
Our brief conversation came after Axios reported he was going to ask Israeli PM Bibi Netanyahu not to strike back.
#BREAKING: US President Trump announces the U.S. Navy was ordered to begin the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz immediately.
This follows talks with the Iranians in Pakistan during which, according to Trump, Washington and Tehran failed to reach an agreement on the nuclear issue.
The US president has also instructed the navy to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran.
@rbnmckenna86 What matters, big picture, is the degree to which political incentives like these distort philosophical research. I continue to think they are pretty negligible overall (although I would be in favor of eliminating a lot of this competitive funding scheme nonsense).
@rbnmckenna86 Just want to make the point that there's also an (ever-widening) path to academic success if you're willing to signal right-wing bona fides.
@rbnmckenna86 I just want some examples of what I thought we were discussing, namely, "philosophyβs problems with politically motivated deterioration of standards". You've provided a general diagnosis of malaise in the humanities. I don't see how that is responsive at all.
@rbnmckenna86 But ultimately I was asking you to identify some pathologies *specific to philosophy* that the report undersold or glossed over. (I know what Brandon has in mind -- Mind publishes papers on deadnaming eeeek! -- but I'm not sure what you do.)
People talk about how an AI thatβs been tasked to make paperclips could destroy humanity by using all of the worldβs resources to produce more.
What weβre seeing now though is humans repurposing all kinds of inputs (including habitable land) in a quest to build more powerful AI.
We have the self-reported height of 30,000+ men.
Nobody is 5'11".
Every guy who's 5'11" quietly rounds up to 6'0" and you can see the exact bar where the lie happens π
