A happy #DavesCarIDService Summer Solstice to all Northern Hemispherians who celebrate! And to those living south of the equator, an equally happy Winter Solstice. And what better way to mark the occasion than with the awe-inspiring Carhenge outside Alliance, Nebraska.

Though not as well known or vandalized as Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo, Texas, Carhenge is the perfect spot to celebrate the occasion. Especially car buffs of the Druid persuasion. It was create by Jim Reinders, a native son of Alliance, who studied engineering at the University of Nebraska after his Naval service in WW2. Maybe he was acquainted with Johnny Carson, who was a student at UNL at the same time.

In any after graduation he spent a long and prosperous career in the oil industry, taking him to 30 different countries. One of those was the UK, where he visited Stonehenge and was struck with the inspiration of Carhenge.

But Reimer's creation was no mere throwaway LOL visual gag. He carefully studied the OG Stonehenge, and recreated it on his boyhood farm as a tribute to his father. It is the same scale, diameter, solar orientation as the original. It comprises 39 cars, just as Stonehenge has 39 stones. The outer Sarcen circle has 28; 21 standing, 6 lintels, 1 fallen. The inner trilithon has 10; 7 standing, 3 lintels. And a heel stone / altar stone, which is in this case a 1962 Cadillac. Now that's what I call sticking to the bit.

It officially opened at sunrise, Summer Solstice 1987, with champagne, poetry, music, and a play written for the occasion. Sadly Jim Reimers passed away at age 94 in 2021, but his wacky-yet-serious creation continues to draw thousands of visitors every solstice.

Eh, you can look that up online. But the lintels in this angle (L-R) are: 1965 Ford Fairlane 500, 1965 Chevy Chevelle, 1962 Plymouth Valiant, 1951 Willys Jeep pickup, and 1975 AMC Gremlin.
