"I strongly believe that trade is central to innovation and new technologies for a greener, lower carbon intense economy" - this is what Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala GCON, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), had to say about the role of trade and the WTO in decarbonising the maritime transport system - a critical backbone of global trade 🚢
Our Global Marketing & Growth Director Nnenna Hemeson was honoured to attend this exclusive 'In Conversation With' session at SEC Newgate UK's invitation last week, and to meet and pose this important question to Dr. Ngozi. You can watch Dr. Ngozi's answer in full below.
Cold ironing won't decarbonise the maritime industry alone, but it's an essential step in a wider course to cleaner shipping ⚓
In the wake of MEPC 83 and the International Maritime Organization’s revised emissions and efficiency requirements, the maritime industry is under more pressure than ever to decarbonise and reduce environmental impact across all operations. Action needs to be taken now to avoid facing costly penalties in the near future.
Used while ships are portside, cold ironing in isolation won’t decarbonise the industry. But working alongside fuel innovation, digital reporting, and electrified short sea journeys, it presents the opportunity to reduce portside emissions in the here and now⌛
We are developing the first network of 120 shore power stations designed around actual shipping and cruising routes, where global shipping already flows. Find out more about our projects here: https://t.co/2S3T1x2ojf
Meet Patrick Nicholas, Technical Design Manager here at NatPower Marine. Patrick works across our projects at NatPower Marine to ensure that their design meets technical standards and supports the achievement of project goals.
Like many others on the NatPower Marine team, Patrick enjoys his spare time spent in nature, be that on his sea kayak off the Cornish coast, or clay shooting in the countryside.

"All ports with short sea vessels need to establish electric charging capacity." 🔌This is some of the advice the Environmental Foundation Bellona Europa gives for reaching the ambitious goal of net zero by 2050 in maritime.
To meet sustainability requirements facing the maritime sector, we must electrify short sea journeys where possible. Shore power is already reducing emissions across the globe while ships are at berth. But to electrify short sea journeys and further reduce emissions, using shore power to charge onboard batteries for propulsion is the next step forwards.
We are proud to be delivering the largest global, fully integrated, smart network of charging points for cold ironing and propulsion, in key locations around the world, powered by clean energy. "Halfway through this decisive decade, I call on all of you to think big in your actions. Let us act together with urgency and optimism while we still have the chance." These were the words of Prince William at the Blue Economy & Finance Forum in Monaco this weekend, citing Sir David Attenborough in his plea for the maritime industry to take urgent strides towards protecting our oceans 🪸 #BEFF2025
Our CEO Stefano D. M. Sommadossi joined a panel discussion focused on the challenges and innovative solutions for making shipping and ports more sustainable and resilient in a rapidly evolving landscape.
He spoke about how the utilisation of shore power for cold ironing and propulsion presents the opportunity to completely electrify short sea ferry journeys. Take a look at the snippet below! 🎬
Every single day, around 8 million pieces of plastic enter the earth’s oceans. The theme for this World Environment Day is to #BeatPlasticPollution – one that the entire maritime industry needs to get behind! 🌊
Our work leading the charge to electrify ports and shipping lines is important for counteracting the climate emergency. Equally essential is the protection of marine life the world over, through the elimination of single-use plastics and the clean up of existing plastic waste polluting our earth and oceans.

The adoption of electric and hybrid ships, particularly for short sea journeys and inland shipping, is growing, which is fantastic progress. But is the technology and infrastructure there to support further movement towards renewable energy? 🤔
Our CEO Stefano Sommadossi weighs in on this question in Deutsche Welle, highlighting the crucial steps the shipping industry is already taking to decarbonise, as well as the need for battery technology and charging infrastructure development in the coming years.

On Tuesday evening, NatPower Marine was proud to sponsor and attend Energy Transition: A Scottish Perspective, an event hosted by Scottish Marine Cluster and @WISTAUK at the historic @NLB_UK.
Our team, Martin Olverson and Jucilla Walters, joined an inspiring lineup of industry leaders to discuss the bold steps needed to advance the maritime energy transition.
What were the key takeaways? The urgent need for carbon capture solutions, port electrification, and scalable shore power infrastructure.
With a $4 billion investment underway, NatPower Marine is building a global network of e-charging points—working closely with ports, governments, and shipping operators to reduce GHG emissions across the sector.
Huge thanks to our hosts and fellow sponsors, Clyde Marine Training Ltd and Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), for an evening of productive conversation and collaboration.

Today’s theme for Earth Day is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ 🌍 a prompt to commit to harnessing the power of renewable energy with a call to triple global generation of renewable energy by 2030.
But with 80% of goods travelling by sea, and marine trade set to triple by 2050, it’s clear we cannot seize the true potential of renewable energy without using it to address and reduce the shipping industry’s emissions.
That’s why this Earth Day, and every day, NatPower Marine is paving the way for greener port communities through the employment of electrified shipping ports. Read more about our solution to the challenge of pollution in the maritime sector: https://t.co/jvgt0Vptfj
