@DrJN_SportsMed@TheHipPhysio@SteffanGriffin Nice work! I look forward to reading it when I get my gratis copy (Our chapter on the military tactical athlete will be in Vol 3 sometime later this year.)
Years ago, @SammoWalton and I started talking about the possible mechanisms that physical fitness could benefit service members with brain injury. Fast forward, I am happy that he invited me to the party to lend my military experience and expertise on projects. 1/2
This is something we are seeing in the @DoD_DHA and civilian sectors as well. PTs are making a meaningful impact on the primary care level! @PrimaryCareFPTS
#VAResearchNewsBrief: @VAEasternCO study found integrating physical therapy into primary care teams reduced wait times, eased transportation burden, and helped Veterans try conservative pain treatments before surgery. Veterans reported high satisfaction.

@DrTraceyK I just saw the news on the plane. Not good. After commuting that stretch for 3 yrs while stationed in Quantico, I am convinced that is one of the worst stretches of highway in the US. Maybe second to LA I-5 traffic.

Our paper investigating the effects of VA career development awards (CDA) on subsequent merit funding in rehab scientists is now published. VA scientists with prior CDA demonstrated a 54% ⬆ odds of funding. Great opportunity for early career scientists.

In memory of Chaplain Vincent R Capodanno, 1929-1967.
Awarded the Medal of Honor: “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Chaplain of the 3d Battalion, in connection with operations against enemy forces. In response to reports that the 2d Platoon of M Company was in danger of being overrun by a massed enemy assaulting force, Lt. Capodanno left the relative safety of the company command post and ran through an open area raked with fire, directly to the beleaguered platoon. Disregarding the intense enemy small-arms, automatic-weapons, and mortar fire, he moved about the battlefield administering last rites to the dying and giving medical aid to the wounded. When an exploding mortar round inflicted painful multiple wounds to his arms and legs, and severed a portion of his right hand, he steadfastly refused all medical aid. Instead, he directed the corpsmen to help their wounded comrades and, with calm vigor, continued to move about the battlefield as he provided encouragement by voice and example to the valiant marines. Upon encountering a wounded corpsman in the direct line of fire of an enemy machine gunner positioned approximately 15 yards away, Lt. Capodanno rushed in a daring attempt to aid and assist the mortally wounded corpsman. At that instant, only inches from his goal, he was struck down by a burst of machine-gun fire. By his heroic conduct on the battlefield, and his inspiring example, Lt. Capodanno upheld the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.”
Looking forward to seeing my colleagues this week at the @ACSMNews Annual Meeting. If you are in attendance, please let me know if you would like to learn more about VA research and early career training award opportunities! Post-career tactical athletes need #sportsmed care too!
Our study investigating the effect of sex and post-integration on musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) in female Marines was just accepted by Military Medicine.
The increase in shoulder injuries happen to coincide with the change in physical performance standards to require women to perform pullups during the PFT. I will post the link once the DOI is activated.
While ♀ Marines has significantly ⬆️MSKI risk across the pre-integration and post-integration study periods, overall MSKI risk did not increase following integration. We did see a significant sex by integration interaction in shoulder injuries.
#VAResearchNewsBrief: A VA study of almost 800 Veterans across six VA health systems showed VA's Whole Health approach to care can reduce chronic pain interference in Veterans' daily life.
