On this day last year, Israel murdered our very dearest and bravest colleague Hossam Shabat in an airstrike in Beit Lahia, north of Gaza.

His last words were, "I ask you now: do not stop speaking about Gaza. Do not let the world look away. Keep fighting, keep telling our stories—until Palestine is free."

Hossam was killed a year ago.

Hossam was just a young man who wanted to live freely in his own homeland , to exist without fear, without bombs, without occupation.

Hossam never left Gaza.
Gaza was all he knew, and all he wanted ,to stay, to live, to belong.

Hossam didn’t just report the story ,he lived it.
He sacrificed his safety, his comfort, and his future so the world would know the truth.
He was constantly threatened, yet he kept going ,standing against one of the most powerful propaganda and killing machines of our time.

He was a brave journalist, but beyond that, he was a son, a friend, a human being full of life ,someone who deserved to grow, to dream, and to live.

Israa Jaber, the wife of the Al-Qassam spokesman, once carried a leaflet dropped by the Israeli army, which urged people to provide information about Abu Obaida in exchange for money. She took the leaflet, cut out the image of her husband, and hung it on the wall of her small shelter, which measured no more than 12 square meters.
