The National Commission for Colleges of Education was established by Decree (now Act) 13 of 17th January, 1989 (Amended Act 12 of 1993).

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Ajala, FNAE, began the Commission's national zonal tour in Kano, accompanied by fifteen Provosts of Colleges of Education.

The delegation paid a courtesy visit to His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, who received them at his palace.

Discussions centred on the barriers to educational advancement in northern Nigeria, the role of leadership in addressing them, and opportunities to expand scholarship support for young women seeking to enter teacher education. His Highness, himself a former teacher, welcomed the Commission's reform agenda and offered to support efforts to widen access.

The Executive Secretary commended Kano State's sustained investment in education, which now accounts for close to a third of the state's annual budget.

The zonal tour will take the Commission to all six geopolitical zones, bringing Provosts of Federal, State and Private Colleges of Education together in each zone to examine challenges specific to their region.

Following the successful completion of an intensive Batch II Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) training, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Ajala, FNAE, presented certificates to the 40 participants in recognition of their successful participation in the programme.

Congratulating the participants, Dr. Ajala emphasized that 19th-century teachers cannot effectively teach 21st-century learners without the necessary digital skills, noting that today's students are digitally enabled and deserve technology-driven teaching and learning experiences.

She described digitalisation as critical to the future of teacher education, stressing that every teacher and student must be digitally equipped. As the regulatory body for Colleges of Education, Dr. Angela said NCCE remains committed to driving digital transformation across the sector. She urged the participants to put the knowledge and skills acquired during the training into practice and become champions of digital innovation within the Commission and beyond.

NCCE, Huawei Renew Partnership to Advance AI, Digital Teacher Education

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Ajala, FNAE, has reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to preparing digitally competent teachers as Nigeria embraces Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies in education.

Speaking at the 2026 Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, Dr. Ajala said quality education begins with well-prepared teachers, stressing that AI should empower teachers to deliver better learning outcomes. She highlighted the Commission's ongoing reforms, including the implementation of the Dual Mandate and the review of the NCE Minimum Standards, which now feature specialised programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Data Science and Analytics, Networking and Cybersecurity, and Software and Web Development.

Dr. Ajala also renewed the NCCE's Memorandum of Understanding with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited, describing the company as a dependable partner in digital capacity building. She called for an expanded collaboration through the establishment of a Digital Academy at the Commission to continuously train and certify lecturers, staff and digital champions across Colleges of Education.

The Executive Secretary urged government, industry, academia and development partners to deepen collaboration in building a resilient, technology-driven teacher education system capable of producing graduates equipped for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Last week in the United Kingdom, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Ajala, FNAE, represented Nigeria at the Cambridge Leadership Education Forum. She returned with two conversations that could shape the next phase of teacher education reform.

One was with the leadership of the largest vocational college in the United Kingdom. Their proposal is concrete: online delivery of selected skills courses to Nigerian teachers and students, in the exact domains the Dual Mandate is asking our Colleges of Education to build capacity in, from digital literacy to employability skills.

The other was with Mr. David Phillips, Head of International Business Development at Oxford University Press and Assessment. Where the first conversation focused on the students, this one focused on those who prepare them.

Oxford's interest is in strengthening our lecturers themselves, in areas long identified by our institutions as priorities: technology innovation and integration, mental health support, pedagogical training and classroom management.

Two conversations. Two institutions. One direction. Nigeria's teacher education reform is drawing serious partners who want to build with the Commission, not around it, and whose offers speak directly to the priorities our Colleges of Education have already named.

The months ahead will turn these conversations into collaborations, and those collaborations into outcomes our students, our lecturers and our classrooms can feel.

This is the work the Commission is here to do, and the direction it is moving in.
