Near-fatal asthma is a severe form of asthma characterized by significant airway obstruction, leading to respiratory failure and potentially death if untreated. It involves bronchoconstriction, inflammation, and mucous impaction, often requiring urgent treatment with oxygen, bronchodilators, and steroids. Complications like tension pneumothorax or hyperinflation may occur. Up to one-third of cases necessitate intubation and mechanical ventilation. Early intervention and close monitoring are critical, as many fatalities occur prehospital. Treatment-resistant cases require ICU care or advanced therapies at tertiary centers.
