Buying a car is one of the biggest financial commitments many South Africans will make but complaints about problematic vehicle purchases are mounting. More than 11 000 formal complaints were lodged with the Motor Industry Ombudsman last year. Complaints range from vehicles advertised with features they allegedly lack to used cars developing serious mechanical problems shortly after purchase. @AASouthAfrica CEO Bobby Ramagwede says SA has a growing problem of misrepresentation in the motor industry and discusses what consumers should look out for before buying a vehicle. #Newzroom405

River Plate FC have been some of the biggest transfer transfer window winners I know in recent times. Enzo Fernandez, their money making machine has made them some money again.
Stay with me.
Benfica bought Enzo Fernández for €10 million in July 2022. Seven months later they sold him to Chelsea for €121 million. They did not develop him for years. They did not build him from nothing.
They signed him, watched him win a World Cup, and collected €111 million in profit on a player they owned for less than a single season. It is the most efficient single transaction in this entire story. But it is not the most interesting one.
The most interesting one belongs to River Plate, because River Plate have now been paid twice for the same player, and they are about to be paid a third time.
Let me explain how that works.
When River sold Fernandez to Benfica in 2022, what they sold was a certain part of his economic rights. In fact, when they sold 75 percent of Fernández's economic rights to Benfica in 2022, they did two things that most people missed.
They inadvertently kept a 25 percent sell-on clause, meaning that if Benfica sold him on, River would receive 25 percent of whatever Benfica received above the original purchase price. And they remained registered as one of the clubs that developed Fernández between the ages of 12 and 23, which triggers FIFA's solidarity mechanism on every subsequent international transfer. Of course, that was expected.
The solidarity mechanism under FIFA RSTP Article 21 works as follows. On every international transfer, 5 percent of the total transfer fee of the player is withheld and distributed across every club that trained the player between his 12th and 23rd birthdays.
Years 12 to 15 are worth 0.25 percent of the fee each. Years 16 to 23 are worth 0.5 percent each. River held Fernández for most of that development window, which means they collect the largest single solidarity slice every time he moves internationally.
When Chelsea triggered Fernández's €121 million release clause in January 2023, River received approximately €30 million from the 25 percent sell-on clause on top of their original €10 million fee.
On top of that, FIFA solidarity on a €121 million transfer, with River holding the majority of his development years, produced an estimated additional €4 million. River had already collected roughly €44 million on a player they sold for €10 million.
Manchester City's £125 million deal now triggers the solidarity mechanism again. River hold no sell-on clause from the Chelsea deal, but their development years still count.
On a £125 million fee, their solidarity share is estimated at approximately €5 million. They will collect that without a single negotiation, without a single meeting, and without Fernández ever kicking a ball for them again.
Total estimated River Plate collections across Fernández's career: approximately €49 million and rising, on a player they let go for €10 million in 2022. Benfica made the biggest single profit. But River Plate built the best clause.
