MLK was killed on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel while advocating for sanitation workers in Memphis, TN.
One year before his death (April 4, 1967) Dr. King gave his famous sermon at Riverside Church in New York, where he named the giant triplets of evil in America: racism, materialism, and militarism. Here's an excerpt:
“I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a"person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.
A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life's roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life's highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth…. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

The sermon Dr.King had prepared to preach the week he was killed was entitled: "Why America May Go to Hell."
We give thanks today for our brother Martin and for the ways he exposed the poverty of our wealth, the insecurity of our war-making, and the contradictions of our racism. May we live the good news Martin preached in his life and in his death.

Not sure why I have to say this, but as a Christian, not caring for others, much less cheering their suffering or deaths, isn't really an option we've been given.
Fascist authoritarian regimes try to project narratives that disempower. The greatest resistance is staying empowered and continuing to create, build, and connect in community.

It's important to point out that this is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Jesus teaches in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), the sermon in his hometown synagogue (Luke 4), and basically every other time he opened his mouth.
