@DAaronovitch Thought experiment: I am a non-UK national and beat you, a UK national, to a social tenancy. You remain privately renting. Does your housing situation improve if I later get naturalisation?
Just under 48% of lead tenants in London’s council houses were born outside the UK.
Rayner complains people can't get social housing - but then says we must keep giving it to non-UK nationals. Mad.
No amount of headline-chasing, or following Reform to the extremes, can conceal the damage the Tories did to housing in this country.
People without ILR are already ineligible for social housing, so the Tories are targeting refugees and long-term UK residents who have contributed to this country but are not British citizens, including NHS staff.
It would leave more families at risk of homelessness, while driving up the use of temporary accommodation at taxpayers’ expense.
This unserious, unworkable proposal, copied from Reform, would do nothing to tackle the housing crisis the Tories themselves created.

Today's Times reports on my research on abuse of the EU settlement scheme & student loan system.
I have a longer article out, but a quick thread on some key things we found... 🧵
1) A fifth of all student loans are now going to non-UK nationals, with 1 in 20 to Romanians alone.
