Spectacular day in Arctic Norway today! Last day in Arctic Norway on our Birdwatching Trips Tour what a way to finish! #Norway#birdtour#birding#birdwatching
A few sharp thundery showers yesterday but most pass the reserve by, but with the big skies here at Elmley it’s a great place for storm watching. This storm was north over the Essex coast, lots of lightning and awesome cloud formation.
Having only put up this House Martin nest box 2 weeks ago I thought that it was too late and this year it would be empty, however, when I woke up this morning to here the bubbly chirps coming from just outside my window there was only one thing it could be...
Great news! We have our Arctic Terns back this year on the Isle of May (they didn’t nest last year). These birds have spent their winter in the Antarctic and are now here nesting. You might need a hat!
@DavidKentNature@BritishMoths@mothsinkent@BCKentBranch I can see on Kent Moths that they have been recorded at Elmley, not sure where but absolutely going to spend some time looking when I am out next week ing the breeding bird survey at the wilder areas of the reserve where there is a lot of ragwort!!
This was ZNT last night. I still haven’t found her. I suspect she has been rescued but calls to local vets and rescues have proved unsuccessful so far. People are looking for her locally.
@PaulGri29126854 Hi Paul, while not aware of a minimum number of nest for success there is definitely safety in numbers, more set of eyes to spot danger, more bodies to drive off predators with collective mobbing and distraction tactics. Video of Lapwings and Redshanks driving off a stoat.
Excellent session @Sandwichbirdobs produced c50 DAINTY DAMSELFLY, 3 SCARCE BLUE-TAILED DAMSELFLY including 2 aurantiaca females, 1 Lesser Emperor and a good variety of dragonflies and damselflies. @BDSdragonflies@smallshire#KentDragonflies

The Bird’s-foot Trefoil, Lotus corniculatus was looking spectacular on my walk yesterday! It was impossible to take a photo without a bee! This plant supports 130 invertebrate species so for me it’s definitely worthy of best in show for this week’s #WildflowerShow#Wildflowerhour
Wonderful sight this morning 3 sibling fledged lapwings practicing flying, one of the 1st broods to hatch & the parents have done a heroic job getting them through all the perils they’re exposed to on their journey to adulthood. Within mts of redshank & oystercatcher chicks
