Wild detail people miss, Nolan cuts almost every god from actually appearing. Zeus is just thunder. Poseidon is just storms. Athena, played by Zendaya, seems like the one exception showing up in visions, until the ending reveals she’s actually the ghost of a priestess Odysseus’s men murdered in Troy. The gods aren’t gods here, they’re guilt.

This is the detail that recontextualizes the whole film, Zendaya’s Athena isn’t really a goddess at all, she’s revealed to be a slain Trojan priestess haunting Odysseus’s conscience. Nolan basically turned divine intervention into trauma.
