Taking Profits: A Logical (& Emotional) Guide

If this is you, you might want to read this. It's a long post, but it will help you to stay calm and sleep at peace every night (hopefully).

In any form of investing, be it stocks, NFTs, meme coins, tokens, etc, the most important thing you must protect is your downside. So here is a strategy that can help you mitigate risks, and still secure profits.

Layering Up.

Before we jump about this, do note that there is still inherently the need for thorough research and due diligence in whatever you invest in, understanding the value and potential of your assets.

What the F is Layering Up?

Let's use an example to explain this easily.

Imagine you've bought 5ETH worth of something.

The idea is to layer up your selling price at different points.

- The value increases by 20%, sell 20% of your holdings
- It climbs up to 40%; sell another 20%
- Repeat this at 60% and 80% increase.
- Finally, when it hits 100%, sell your last batch.

If you followed this pattern, your profit would be around 3 ETH. Of course, the ideal case is to sell at the top, but who knows when is the top (anyone who says they know is lying, or speaking in hindsight)? It could have gone the other way as well.

By the way, this is a hypothetical example - if you are bullish long-term on your investments, you can either adjust the layers upwards or hold some of them to Valhalla.

Protecting Your Downside

This approach helps you to secure some profit, reducing the 'all-or-nothing' risk. By selling at incremental stages, you protect your investment against sudden market downturns. If the market suddenly drops, you've already secured some gains. You sleep better at night. And you have the firepower to buy more.

Sustainability Is Key

This method will help to keep your emotions in check and prepare you to weather the market's ups and downs. Because let's face it - if you are not mentally/emotionally strong, you will get wiped out.

I personally adopt this method as well. Because even though it's practically impossible to achieve maximum profit, this ensures you've got a safety net and survive for the long term.

Remember, it's not about how fast you move, but how far you can go with security and stability.

Be sustainable. Live to fight another day.
