Our challenges:
1: Understand how soil type and biology affect the resistance of exposed salt marsh to extreme wave forcing.
2: Develop methods for mapping such resistance across space and time for any given set of sea level, wave and tide conditions.

We aimed to understand #saltmarsh resistance to #erosion. We wrote a review paper (https://t.co/6zACv6xO3s), which highlighted a knowledge gap on how different substrate properties have a combined effect on substrate strength. #WorldWetlandsDay@CamFilmWorks
Our field/flume data show that the sediment and vegetation type affect the resistance of #marshes to #erosion. We recorded more erosion in sandy sediments and more erosion close to roots and voids. #WorldWetlandsDay@CamFilmWorks
In this paper, we CT-scanned #marsh#soils to create high-res 3D images. Our scans of marsh soils in SE and NW England found that the shape and distribution of roots/voids varies with vegetation/sediment type. #WorldWetlandsDay@CamFilmWorks

As we enter the final day of #COP26, lets hope that the draft declaration strengthens clause 20 on #naturebasedsolutions and delivers on clauses 56-59 to consider the interface between ocean and land as a critical focus of mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Fascinating session on #BlueCarbon at #COP26 highlighting the importance of connection between science, policy and most importantly communities in protecting and restoring mangroves and other coastal wetlands. Available to watch/review: https://t.co/sfRaWbeqTL
@jamesthetyke talks about using salt marshes for ‘premium grazing’ #COP26 but grazing impacts vegetation complexity and increases vulnerability to marginal erosion and #saltmarsh loss, as our work has demonstrated: https://t.co/KS0P0GIE2e
Our project has explored the vulnerability of coastal wetlands to erosion during storm events. See our film produced by @CamFilmWorks showing importance of sediment, vegetation type and land management. https://t.co/vxXJ4gqKiB
How do we secure #BlueCarbon resources? We need permanence of the coastal wetland stores. @jamesthetyke of @WWTworldwide#COP26 highlights challenge of creating a stable coastal carbon source in dynamic coastal environments.
#UlfathIbrahim of #Maldives talking about the ambition to develop 70 blue carbon reserves based on coastal wetlands, mangroves. #COP26 Important for carbon, sea defences and biodiversity.
The vital role of mangroves for climate change mitigation and adaptation about to start at #COP26 Exploring how coastal #BlueCarbon is an important component of dealing with the issues. Follow livestream here: https://t.co/sfRaWbeqTL
RESIST aimed to understand #saltmarsh resistance to #erosion in the face of #climatechange. We wrote a lit review, undertook field/lab work, and captured drone images, which can be used to map erosion and plant species. #COP26@CamFilmWorks

We CT-scanned #marsh#soils to create high-res 3D images to understand why & where erosion occurs. The shape & distribution of roots & voids varied with vegetation & sediment type. #COP26@CamFilmWorks

Tune in to learn about our exciting research into how and why #saltmarshes erode and therefore how we can improve their ability to use salt marshes as effective #naturebasedsolutions to flooding in a changing climate. #COP26@CamFilmWorks

Great to see this work published. A step change in our understanding of what lies beneath the surface of #saltmarshes. Very honoured to have had you on our @NercResist team, @Clem_Chirol.
