Use SSH if you need to run commands on a server somewhere else, not on the laptop in front of you.

You type at home, but the server is in a data centre. Sent as plain text, anyone on the network in between can read it, password included.

SSH turns everything you type into scrambled bytes before it leaves your laptop. For example, ls leaves as something like 9f 3a e1 07, and the server turns it back into ls and runs it.

The answer comes back scrambled too, so you get a live terminal on that machine while anyone snooping on the wifi sees only noise.

That's what SSH gives you.

Server vs Serverless, the actual difference:

A server is a machine you rent that runs all day. Your code starts once and sits in memory, waiting.

Serverless keeps nothing running. A request arrives, the provider starts a copy of your function, runs it, and throws it away.

Everything else follows from that. Idle costs you nothing, but nothing survives either: no cache in a variable, no open connection, no job ticking in the background.

Traffic that comes in bursts wants serverless. Traffic that never stops wants the server.

Use pgvector if your search needs to understand meaning, not spelling.

A user searches for healthy breakfast, but your row says oats with banana. No shared words, so trigram gives you nothing.

An embedding model reads each row and turns it into a long list of numbers, a vector. Rows that mean similar things end up with similar numbers, so oats with banana lands close to healthy breakfast.

Postgres sorts by the distance between those numbers, so the closest meaning comes back first.

That's what pgvector gives you.

Two users tap Book on seat 12A in the same millisecond.

Your code checks whether the seat is free. For both of them, it is.

Both inserts commit. Two people now own 12A, and your app told both of them yes.

The check was never wrong. Another transaction committed in the gap between your SELECT and your INSERT.

Your turn:

Seat reads as free for user A ✅
Seat reads as free for user B ✅
Both writes commit ❌
Your app reported success twice ❌

Where do you put the rule so the database decides this, not your code? 👇

SOLUTION:

One unique index on (flight_id, seat_no). The second insert then fails with SQLSTATE 23505, unique_violation.

Catch it and show seat taken. No lock, no retry loop, no second round trip.

SELECT then INSERT can never hold: another transaction is always allowed to commit in the gap.

Use trigram indexes if you’re doing fuzzy search in Postgres.

A user types spagetti bolognaise, but your database has spaghetti bolognese.

Trigram search breaks the text into overlapping 3-character chunks for example, spagetti becomes spa, pag, age, get, ett, tti, while spaghetti contains many of the same chunks.

Postgres compares this overlap to calculate how similar the strings are, so even with a typo, the correct result can still be found.

That’s the magic behind pg_trgm.
