My favorite, is Metroid. When you have the Ice Beam, you can freeze enemies and jump on them. You can strategically freeze the enemy in a certain spot, and use it as a ledge so you can jump higher. Cool.

What is your favorite version of landing on an enemy mechanics?

In Kirby's Adventure, you can jump kill an enemy, but it also injures you slightly. Ouch.

And, in Kiwi Kraze (New Zealand Story), there's no collision at all. You can just walk through most enemies. Although, they shoot things at you that hurt.

I guess they felt like it was too crowded to jump over these things. IDK.

In Rygar, you can stun the enemy by jumping on it. Kind of cool. And bounce off them. That's a key game element is jumping higher off an enemy.

Try to jump on an enemy in most NES games, and you die... instantly. (Adventure Island).

But we did get a few games that you can jump kill an enemy. Addams Family, Ducktales, Tiny Toons. Here in Zelda 2, you can do it if you get a special sword skill and press down.

Let's see what other possibilities there are.

Surely, Super Mario Bros 2 would follow the original template... and oh, look at that. You can just stand on the enemy's head.

Well... to be fair, the US never got Mario 2. It was too hard. We got some Arabian themed game (flying carpets) that they just slapped Mario graphics on

What should happen when you land on an enemy in a game? The game that shipped with every Nintendo, Super Mario Bros, said it should flatten the enemy, and give you a bounce. We learned this, and came to expect it.
But, for most games, that wasn't true. (thread)
