@NoRedText@GirlyScouts Now that said, there’s significant potential the reasoning there is a selection filter issue (basically theres 1 female surgeon for every 4 male surgeons so if you assume they select the best of the best of each gender the female surgeons should be top ~30% on average)
@NoRedText@GirlyScouts I can’t speak to CEOs or pilots but statistically female surgeons are slightly less likely to have patients die (given same case difficulty). This is mostly because they take slightly longer and are better about ensuring nothing is left in the wound/contaminated.
@BoringBiz_ You’re assuming no changes to dollar value per unit output. If I make 7 billion cars everyone has a car. If I make 200 billion cars I have 193 billion cars I can’t sell. I don’t make 20-30x more money.
Long term we invent new stuff to buy probably but short run it costs jobs.
@prettycritical To be clear while this may be a gotcha I don’t mean it to be that way. I find your reaction irrational but largely understandable and am curious where you draw the line given money is fungible.
@prettycritical Would you feel the same if he was paying 4k a month in rent and asked for 1k? What if you knew he was putting all that money into a fund for a downpayment to buy a house?
@Luv_Xcuses Attracting immigrants. Especially absolute top end immigrants.
Einstein, Tesla, Elon, von Braun, Sergei Brin… 1/3 of all US AI researchers.
Heck “it’s as American as blue jeans” references an invention of a Bavarian immigrant
@InlandCaGuy@st_louis_stan To be clear I’m not making any point on the general claim of “fantasy and actual desire are not always the same.” Just that in this case there’s no reason to assume they’re not.
@RealHousewifeMi He could have ended up financially successful without a wife. You however gave him a gift much more valuable than money in a home and family. Money in a real marriage is for the marriage not for the “earner”. You don’t need to justify your value to some loser on the internet.
@RealHousewifeMi This pot is kinda cringe, but men before you hate on it read the original post this guy responded to. She sounded totally reasonable, he acted like a sexist loser and she reacted with words that sound bad out of context. Don’t dogpile over bad wording fueled by justified rage.
@romanhelmetguy I’m not a fan of us being in Iran at all, but I can think of perhaps no better use of money than to protect the ideal of the incalculable value of an individual human life. Life, Liberty, and Prosperity for each not just for all!
@JulianRoepcke The idea of the incalculable value of the individual is the highest ideal of American ethos. I wish we embodied it in everything but in anything where we do I’m proud of my nation. Life, liberty, and prosperity is for each not for all.
@monsterhunter45 The threat to Europe was Russia. Europe no longer needs America to counter that threat so they no longer benefit from being a US protectorate. China is a threat in Asia but not Europe so why should they care as long as China trades with them. Realpolitik has no room for loyalty
@monsterhunter45 The loss of American influence in the ME and Africa as a consequence of EU realignment may have disastrous economic effects for both parties due to shifting neocolonial alignments, but neither the US nor EU citizenry want to deal with the realities underlying that situation.
@DrDahl@zapatas_mom@HMhnuey I’m all for all doctors having sponsored med school, fixing residency as a system, and being paid 200k as a floor income (it is grueling and I’m glad good doctors exist)… but doctors whining about money makes the profession look terrible and wildly out of touch.
@DrDahl@zapatas_mom@HMhnuey Residency (let’s use gen surg as a base because it has notoriously bad hours) is paid ~70-80k annually. Assuming 80 hour weeks. That is $15-20 per hour. Not great but well above min. wage. $200k in debt takes 2-3 years with a 300k salary by living like an average person.
@uncledoomer For the same reason that we live in the solar system (our sun is called Sol) where other “solar systems” are technically star systems.
The Moon is what we call our natural satellite
@RealestMercury To be clear, excess deaths expected from the strait of hormuz being closed for a month during peak buying period for fertilizer might already be exceeding 100k. But obviously the expected mortality was US soldiers (much higher overall) and those deaths will mostly be in Africa
@NathanpmYoung Whether you should have opinions you feel are worth sharing on things you don’t know much about is a different question. In general I dislike hightower intellectualism so I tend not to ascribe to that ideal, but we can reasonably disagree on that point.
@NathanpmYoung Very specifically your first message that she supposedly sent is the thing she is responding to not what she said.
And its good to separate the idea of smart/dumb from knowledgeable on everything/ignorant of everything. We have too many PhDs who ignore ignorance cause “smart”
