Slashing scientific research into climate change will not prevent our planet from warming. It will just mean we will know less. https://t.co/khR1vlkrMm
In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.
None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.
We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.
Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at https://t.co/OIfGPvkFEU.
There's an easy answer to this question: The founders can pay the tax in a securitized piece of the company. Just pay in equity/shares. If the company ends up tanking, then there really was never any wealth to tax to begin with, the govt gets nothing, but also the founders didn't have to pay anything real.
If it takes off and is worth billions, the govt can sell those shares or put them in a sovereign wealth fund. Everybody wins.
Fires in France have now burned over 91,000 acres, by far the most of any year since the satellite record started in 2006. Current area burned is about 34x larger than this date in a typical (median) year:
This amazing website, called "Worse on Purpose," is cataloguing all the ways companies are deliberately and secretively degrading their own products
As usual, in most cases the culprit is private equity extracting enormous sums while everyone else is left worse off.
Paris, the capital of France, has recorded more days above 40°C this week than during the 147-year period spanning from 1872 to 2019.
Historic is an understatement.
We have just witnessed France’s hottest day in recorded history. The severity of this heatwave is truly hard to comprehend. Over 50 millions people will be under red-level extreme heat warnings tomorrow. Sadly, what’s going on there is a foreshadowing of our future.
France could record its hottest day ever in the coming days, exceeding the 30°C mark nationwide for the first time on record.
An absolutely historic heatwave is on the way.
Yet another study shows a 24% reduced risk of dementia after the Shingles vaccine. This one in over 500,000 participants with a recent skilled nursing facility stay, adding to 4 huge natural experiments in 4 countries (US, Canada, Wales, and Australia)

A very impressive study for how we could prevent lung cancer more than 5 years before it is diagnosed. Using machine learning, discovery of a 14-plasma protein signature of risk that predicts responsiveness to an antibody therapy to interleukin, IL-1β

Hard to believe I’m even writing this.
Meteorological summer hasn’t even begun, yet Paris, France has already logged more days above 32°C (89.6°F) than its annual average.
We've seen the Shingles vaccine is linked with reduced risk of Alzheimer's and dementias in 4 large natural experiments.
Today, the potential of high-dose flu vaccines vs standard dose for the same in a large retrospective age 65+ cohort [N>160,000). More pronounced in women (like Shingles vaccine)

El Niño is coming, and it is shaping up to be a big one.
Over at The Climate Brink I've put together a compilation of the latest forecasts by different modeling groups. They suggest that we might see an event comparable in strength to what we saw in 2016.
Sure sounds like somebody at DOGE took the Social Security numbers and personal information of every American on record, and put it on a thumb drive to bring home to Elon Musk’s AI company.
Using focused ultrasound (FUS) in the lab we wanted to mimic what GLP-1 drugs do — without the weekly injections. Using a machine found in every hospital (and every submarine) we stimulated the vagus nerve in obese mice and they lost weight. And they had less inflammation. Does a new future with fewer drugs await?
The NYT & the Atlantic's stories about the Pentagon, Anthropic and OpenAI suggest the military aims to find patterns about Americans thru commercial smartphone location data, which the models would draw inferences from, identifying individuals & groups, for example, at a protest
For 50 years, global warming had a very consistent trend (+0.19 °C/decade) with a boring, predictable range of natural variations around it.
During the last three years, we've broken out above that range, suggesting the pace of change has quickened.
