@ephemeracity Waterside would have been heavily developed prior to archaeological mitigation being brought in via the planning system, so a lot of information may have simply been lost… Which makes finds like this extra valuable! Thank you for keeping us updated, it’s been a real treat
We said a sad farewell today in Winchester to the (probable) Iron Age Currency bar, identified on here by Hilde at @NewForestArch after I picked it up at Calshot. It has to be photographed by Finds Officer Alexei and the pics sent to the British Museum for identification 👋😢
@ephemeracity Such a shame you won’t see it again, but it’s a find to be VERY proud of. Great piece of info for the historic environment record, enhancing protection & research. Can’t find much else recorded for the Iron Age along that stretch, so it’s genuinely important & a job well done 😊
@ephemeracity@findsorguk @HantsCulture My pleasure. Apologies in advance if it turns out to be something more along the lines of a piece of door furniture… 😅

The ancient land of the New Forest has myths and folklore in abundance.
Have you heard about the New Forest Coven of Witches who danced naked in the woods, casting a spell on Hitler so he would not invade Britain in WW2?
Me neither until this week.

In 1918 and 1919, the War Dog Training School near Lyndhurst accommodated 200 dogs which were trained to carry messages under battle conditions. It is still possible to find echoes of the trenches used on the open heathland today.

Some of our followers may recall the request for help finding the ‘Brenda’ tree, a tree with “Brenda” engraved into the bark. The power of the internet and local help has meant that the tree has been found. We will now add it to our Tree Graffiti record: https://t.co/YM13WZ7uHf
