In honor of what would have been Dad’s birthday, I wore his “GG-W-113” Pilot & Navigator’s watch, first issued during the Vietnam war & into the 1980’s.

This particular watch was made in September 1969 & Dad wore it while deployed to Vietnam. There were a few manufacturers making them, but in this case it’s Hamilton, who still produces respected watches.

A similar watch was issued to non-pilots, but under a different designation. It did not have the same precision movement & did not “hack”.

(in some parts of military aviation, mission briefings often start with a “Time Hack”, where everyone sets their watch to the same time, down to the second. The watch stops ticking when the crown is pulled out, allowing you to set the time & wait for whoever is responsible for the time hack to start reading out times. For example, “10 seconds until 06:30”. Then you get a countdown from 5 seconds. Once on time, the person announces “hack”, everyone pushes the crown of their watch in & now you’re all on the same time)

Some of the Tritium used for the luminous minutes hand appears to have broken off & since it’s not in the watch face, I presume this watch was serviced at some point & the debris removed. I can’t imagine it’s been serviced since at least 2010 & probably earlier. The Tritium has long since stopped glowing, with a half-life of 12 years.

The vinyl strap appears in good condition; I have no way of knowing if it’s original or not.

Production of the GG-W-113 ran from 1967 through the late 1980’s, when quartz movements became more popular. When I went to pilot training, I was issued a Casio G-Shock. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but man I wish I’d kept that watch. What a great watch it is. But, just like the GG-W-113, military watches are built to be tough while simultaneously ultimately disposable.

It’s unknown how many of these watches were produced, but it’s a lot. They vary in price now just a little bit based on the manufacturer & condition, but are not overly pricey. As I said, there are a lot of them still floating around.

Not that I’d sell mine, of course.

Despite not being serviced in I have no idea how long, this winds & starts ticking like a champ. It will run as long as I keep it wound, keeping good time – losing maybe a few seconds a day. After I take it off, it still keeps ticking for about 36 hours, it’s specified “reserve”.

I generally only wear this on Dad’s birthday, which would have been today. I’d like to preserve it…

Which brings me to a question. Watch winding box or just the box? I like the idea of all my watches keeping time even when I’m not wearing them, but someone said it’s like leaving your car running when not in use & there is some validity to that argument.

I’d appreciate some input.

I’ll leave you with a story Dad liked to tell about Vietnam. One of his troops began refusing to go into the sandbag bunker when mortar fire came in. He claimed he saw a Cobra in it.

Nobody else ever saw it, and they searched, but periodically this guy said he saw it.

Dad finally told him that the next time he saw the Cobra, he should “take care of it”. After all, everyone had guns (his troops were more like soldiers than Airmen, patrolling & defending around & outside the airbase perimeter).

One day, this guy comes bolting out of the bunker screaming “Fire in the Hole!”. Everyone hits the dirt & there is an explosion inside the bunker. This guy alleges he saw the Cobra & employed a grenade to “take care of it”.

I’m afraid I never thought to ask if they found any remains of a snake & can’t verify it, but Dad thought this story hilarious.

California has officially signed the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” (AB 2624) into law. This bill was created only after I exposed widespread fraud in immigrant communities across America, specifically in California’s Medicaid, nonprofits and other welfare programs funded by our tax dollars.

These politicians need the fraud to continue and they sadly use immigrants to do so often. They fund nonprofits and NGOs with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars every year for immigration services, including free healthcare and have now made “immigration support service providers” essentially a protected class in California.

For example, if I film a hospice or a “learing center” with no patients receiving millions through Medicaid and the owner gives me a paper saying I cannot publish the video, I cannot publish it. If I publish it to expose them and they claim it caused them “fear” or a third party threatens them, I face a minimum $4,000 civil fine plus the legal fees of the individual or group suing me.

This bill was created by the Attorney General’s wife and co-sponsored by CHIRLA, a nonprofit that has received over $80,000,000 in taxpayer dollars for “immigrant support services.” Do you understand how this works yet? When the fraud is exposed, they create new laws to protect the fraudsters and penalize those who expose it.

By signing this bill, the Governor and California politicians expose themselves as the corrupt politicians they are. This is not the end, the fight has just begun. More to come soon, this is far from over.
