Kenya is walking into 2027 with an inflation problem that could become very painful, very fast.
Headline inflation has already risen from 4.4% in January to 6.49% in July 2026. Food inflation is running at 9.0%. Transport costs are up 15.6%.
Now add election-year money.
Billions will move through rallies, transport, printing, mobilisation, hotels, advertising, fuel, food and campaign networks. That money will create temporary demand, but if supply does not expand at the same speed, prices will respond.
And food is where ordinary Kenyans will feel it first.
Unga. Milk. Eggs. Cooking oil. Sugar. Beans. Vegetables. Bread. Meat. Fuel.
Today, an egg is roughly KSh20 on average before boiling, transport, rent and the vendor's margin. So I am not literally forecasting mayai boilo at KSh100.
But the joke is carrying a serious warning.
When food inflation is already at 9%, transport is above 15%, incomes are stagnant and billions of political shillings are about to chase the same goods and services, the cost of simply being alive can rise brutally.
You do not need 20% national inflation for families to feel like the economy is collapsing.
If your salary remains KSh30,000 while food, fare, rent, electricity, school fees and basic household items keep rising, your personal inflation rate becomes a crisis long before economists declare one.
2027 could become the year Kenyans discover that elections are not only expensive at the ballot box. They can also become expensive at the supermarket, petrol station and kibanda.
Na hiyo mayai boilo ya KSh100 tunacheka nayo leo?
Tusicheke sana.

State House does not need Ksh. 18 billion for twelve months. These funds could be used to subsidize rising fuel and food costs
Business will teach you lessons no MBA ever will. A customer will teach you product development. A delayed payment will teach you cash flow.
A bad hire will teach you leadership. A competitor will teach you innovation. And an empty bank account will teach you discipline.
The painful truth about money is that when you do not have enough, even small problems become emergencies. A delayed payment can affect rent, food, school fees and your peace of mind. That is why financial stability is not about showing off—it is about living with dignity and having choices.
