I need everyone who uses AI to generate art & text to notice what Vince Gilligan says here. You're surrendering your brain, your creativity, the divine spark within you to a machine. Someday you'll wake up and find you're no longer capable of writing or thinking. And for what?
There's something very sinister about a world where everything is entertainment. Kids no longer encounter works like Beowulf or Canterbury Tales in popular culture because it might bore them - and increasingly they don't encounter them in school for the same reason.
In Fahrenheit 451, the abolition of reading began with tech companies simplifying books into summaries that you could read in five minutes. Because people no longer engaged with the texts, they forgot how to think. Then came the book-burnings.
so many people (not just students) have this idea that a university is somehow trying to exploit or trick or punish you when it assigns you work. they're trying to help you! they can't teach you anything if you refuse to do any work!
‘Sound’ (loud sound), ‘sound’ (safe and sound), and ‘sound’ (water) are not related.
‘Sound’ (loud) comes from Latin ‘sonus.’
‘Sound’ (safe and) comes from Old English ‘gesund,’ meaning "healthy."
‘Sound’ (water) comes from Old Norse ‘sund,’ meaning “strait."

the same folks who spent the last twenty years saying “what is the point of books and art” are now saying “here’s a machine that makes bad books and art” and frankly I don’t feel we’re under any obligation to take them seriously.

I'm trying to be cool about AI but every time a new article comes out comparing it to a paintbrush I become marginally less cool about AI
