Sitting in Green Park Mayfair and just had a brief conversation with a man who was driving a refuse collection lorry. He emptied the container adjacent to my park bench. I thanked him. The man sitting next to me asked ‘why you thanking him?’ in a slightly sneering manner.

I chose not to answer him because when you are aware that someone really is a prick you must avoid them.

What I will say publicly though is that refuse collectors, road sweepers are as important as surgeons and doctors in society. If in doubt let them disappear for a month and then you will undoubtedly agree.

Do not disrespect them. Appreciate them.

Why would I want to spend time here?

Not a single tree, bin bags on the floor, street clutter everywhere, crappy paving, no design standards for signage, total vehicle dominance.

A simple(ton's) guide to understanding climate change and wildfires:

Yes, the Biscarrosse wildfire was started by a van that caught fire. The flames spread to roadside vegetation before moving into the forest. That is a fact.

What isn't true is the claim that this means climate change had nothing to do with it.

Climate change didn't set the van on fire. It helped create the conditions that allowed a single vehicle fire to become a major wildfire.

France is suffocating under intense, recurring heatwave conditions. The Landes de Gascogne forest has been turned into a tinderbox, where a single ignition source was all it took for disaster to unfold. The flames spread rapidly, burning thousands of hectares and forcing thousands of people to flee.

The van was the spark. The heat and dry conditions were the fuel. Hotter, drier landscapes mean fires spread faster, burn harder and become far more destructive.

Stop staring at the match and start looking at why it was able to become such a disaster.

You will not get a state pension.

So, what does this mean.

It means the only personal responsible for your retirement is yourself.

You have to start investing early. Take advantage of tax breaks in a private SIPP.

Opt in for workplace pensions and put in what you can afford too.

Be prepare to work for a lot longer.

Have children you can provide care for you,

If you do not adopt this mindset or attitude today you’re future looks very bleak there will be not state support.

We're now having "once-in-a-generation" heat events like we're being spammed by bots.
