This is disturbing on so many levels.

- Brendan and his wife are arrested for non crime hate incident - this apparently involved 6 police officers in 2 cars and a police van.

- I’m not entirely clear what the “hate” incident relates to, but Brendan refers to “angry emails regarding a de-frocked priest”.

- Brendan had to repeatedly insist that police allow him to inform his children that both he and their mother were being arrested and that they needed to get an adult to look after them. The police reportedly wouid have been happy to take Brendan and his wife to the station leaving the children alone on a farm, unaware of what had happened.

- Then the police searched their home and car, seized all devices and held them in cells for 10 hours.

- After a 2 month investigation all charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.

THIS is the British criminal justice system in 2025. THIS is what it considers criminality. THIS is the amount of resources it is prepared to allocate in response to people expressing their feelings, beliefs or opinions. THIS is the type of thing that police forces across the country are choosing to focus on rather than violent or sexual offences.

This is happening in a country which officially still has free speech. And our politicians seem happy to let it continue.
