I don’t like releasing scenes before an episode is finished, but over the past month, with major new AI tools dropping and the landscape shifting fast, I felt compelled to share the full cold open of Episode 7. The rest remains in production, and I’ll release it as soon as I can stop mowing the lawn.
It’s come to my attention that THE MIDNIGHT THUNDER SHOW may be the first photorealistic, scripted, TV-style series created entirely with AI media tools… IN THE WORLD! If that’s true, it would mean more to me than the show itself. A historical achievement.
I’m not trying to “disrupt” anything. I’m not making money. I’m spending it. I’m fascinated by the creative possibilities and by the larger questions these tools raise about labor, ethics, authorship, and storytelling. The philosophical and economic implications of AI in media are worth wrestling with. My only mischievous aim is to FORCE THE CONVERSATION NOW, while we’re still defining the rules.
For context: I’m a published novelist and magazine writer. I value creativity and human talent above all else. I have no desire to slit my own throat or anyone else’s. But there is much to grapple with.
For the record, this scene was built entirely with AI visual and audio tools, assembled in Adobe Premiere, from a script I wrote the old-fashioned way: typing at a keyboard. No templates. No procedural generators. Just me, multiple AI platforms, and a story.
This show is a fever-dream version of my life in another dimension. The heroes are AI avatars of my real-life friends, some since grade school. My wife plays my wife. My car, “Midnight Thunder,” is real. Even our cats exist in this world.
I produced and released the first episode in September 2023. I didn’t have a story but was playing with AI tools and thought I could tell a story with them. “But WHAT story?” I gazed out my office window. There, parked as always, was my 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis, which I call “Midnight Thunder” to annoy the wife and amuse the children. “Okay—I’ll call it ‘The Midnight Thunder Show.’ It’s about me as an… explorer? Okay. Let’s go!” That choice, the mixing of fantasy and reality, has added to the uncanny valley-ness of it all.
