We’ve been living in NYC for over four years now.
I don’t like that I haven’t felt the sun on my face since October and won’t for months more.
I don’t like that, at least once a day, I walk past someone who isn’t all there, and for a few seconds there exists a slight possibility in my mind that they will confront me.
It happened once on the subway. The guy started violently waving a metal baton in the air as we all scrambled to the next car in a panic.
I don’t like that my son watches as the person in front of us jumps over the subway turnstile and doesn’t pay, with no consequences.
I don’t like the random extra income tax you pay on top of federal and state.
So many things do suck here.
Why stay, then?
I like that I’m surrounded on all sides by people who are living their dreams.
I like that my kids have access to some of the best schools in the world.
I like that we are blocks away from some of the best food in the world.
I like that the doctors here are some of the best in the world.
I like that we can walk anywhere we want: dentist, coffee, haircut - just walk out the door and you’re there in a minute.
I like that everyone comes through here, so we see distant friends constantly.
I like that my kids have countless playdate options all around us.
I love that my kids’ hangout spots are the Met and the Museum of Natural History.
I love the access to world-class sports entertainment.
I like how fascinating the people I meet on a daily basis are.
I love how friendly the people of New York City are. Never expected it - the community is as warm as you can imagine.
I like how fired up I’m going to feel tomorrow morning as we embark on another year of endless possibilities.
Crazy things are going to happen this year that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else - and the best part is I don’t even know what they will be yet.
Yes, there’s a price to being here.
Yes, there are things that totally suck.
But despite all the nonsense and everything you can point to that’s terrible, there’s a reason people who can choose to live anywhere still choose New York City.
Life is amazing:
-get jacked
-crush it in your career
-ask your crush out on a date (if she says no repeat steps 1 and 2 until she says yes)
-make her your girlfriend then your wife
-when you’re married keep getting jacked and keep crushing it in your career
-leave massive tips at restaurants
-make large anonymous donations to special needs charities
-buy drinks for people without expecting one in return
-live in the same town with your boys one day coaching your kids’ Little League team together
-be a hot strong dad
-host banger Fourth Of July parties
-be the house everyone in your town wants to be at on Thanksgiving
-be the hero you daydreamed about being when you were 15
