DATELINE: SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA
Meeting with the President Lee Jae-Myung .
The first Korea-Africa foreign ministers’ meeting was held as a follow-up measure to the inaugural Korea-Africa summit hosted by the South Korean government in 2024.
During this meeting, attended by 50 ministers across Africa, I highlighted, as Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, shared vulnerabilities that require collective responsibility and stronger international partnerships...
Climate change does not respect borders. Pandemics do not require visas. Conflict in one region disrupts supply chains in another.
Africa contributes less than four per cent of global carbon emissions but suffers disproportionately from climate-related disasters.... the Lake Chad Basin is shrinking at an alarming rate, there is heightened desertification in the Sahel, and rising sea levels are threatening coastal cities such as Lagos and Dakar.
Nigeria proposed the establishment of a Korea-Africa Green Energy Alliance that would combine Korean technology with African resources to drive clean energy development across the continent.
On peace and security, I expressed growing concerns about insecurity in Africa, including terrorism in the Sahel, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, and unconstitutional changes of government, with it's global implications whilst commending South Korea’s contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations . I equally highlighted the need for greater cooperation in intelligence sharing, maritime security, training, and support for African-led peace operations.
I underscored the importance of global health collaboration, noting that Africa still imports 99 per cent of its vaccines and 95 per cent of its medicines.
In this regard, Nigeria welcomes Korea’s K-Bio initiative and proposes a Korea-Africa Health Security Compact aimed at building regional vaccine manufacturing hubs in Africa through Korean technology transfer.
Nigeria also called for reforms in global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, to ensure greater African representation.
We thank Korea for supporting Africa’s inclusion in global institutions and urge Seoul to translate this support into concrete actions during upcoming reform negotiations.
Nigeria does not come to this meeting seeking charity but genuine partnership....South Korea’s transformation into one of the world’s largest economies is an inspiration for Africa.
During his meeting with selected African Foreign Ministers, President Lee Jae-Myung highlighted South Korea’s role in contributing to the development of African countries, pointing to its shared history of achieving independence after colonial rule.
“The Republic of Korea, too, is a country that was liberated from colonial rule after World War II, and after going through difficult times, has come to where it is today. I think we walked a little faster from circumstances similar to those faced by your countries,” He said.
“I hope we can share that experience together and engage in in-depth discussions about what the Republic of Korea can do together with your countries and what support we can provide.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Czech Republic through enhanced institutional cooperation, partnerships, technology transfer, and sustainable development initiatives.
She made this known during meeting with Ambassador of the State of Israel to Nigeria, Michael Freeman. Discussions during the meeting focused on Nigeria–Israel relations, developments in the Middle East, multilateral cooperation, and opportunities for expanded collaboration.
