Scanners (1981) 🤯

A very early treatment from 1976, entitled “Telepathy 2000,” takes place in the future, begins with the protagonist (who is named Harley Quinn) telepathically raping a woman in a subway, and is set as a spy movie. In this version, a company called Cytodyne Amalgamate was breeding evil Scanners to take over the world, and the U.S. government was employing good Scanners to stop them.

David Cronenberg originally penned a treatment for a sci-fi story titled “Telepathy 2000” (also occasionally referred to as The Sensitives) in the early 1970s, following the release of his 1975 film Shivers.

The lead character was named Harley Quinn (decades before the DC Comics character of the same name became widely famous). The story began with Quinn telepathically raping a woman in a subway—a darker, more graphic opening than the vagrant scene that eventually began the 1981 film. The plot focused on corporate espionage involving the Cytodyne Amalgamate Corporation, which was breeding "Scanners" as part of a government program to take over the world. In subsequent drafts, Cronenberg changed the company name to Biocarbon Amalgamate before settling on ConSec for the final 1981 version of Scanners.
