IgiOwe: A Repository for Yoruba Wisdom

I recently wrapped up this project called IgiOwe, a digital repository for Yoruba adages, proverbs, and sayings.

The project was inspired by a simple frustration - I realized it is not easy to search Yoruba words/letters such as adages or proverbs on regular search engines and get satisfying results. You often get scattered, incomplete, or unrelated answers. Sometimes, foreign language suggestions.

So I asked myself a question:
What if there is a rich and reliable place where you can type an English statement and instantly get Yoruba adages along with their translations and interpretations?
That question gave birth to IgiOwe.

=> Design Choices

I used earth brown (or land color) to give the platform a native and ancestral feel. It is a visual reminder of roots and the depth of Yoruba wisdom. A seasoned designer, @Nihmmer, inspired this choice and that set the tone for the entire UI experience.

=> Tech Stack

- Next.js for the frontend.
- Zustand for smooth state management.
- TailwindCSS for the design, plus Motion for subtle animations.
- NestJS, TypeORM, and PostgreSQL for the RESTful API. Hosted on Render and Supabase for reliability and performance.

<=Why such project?

Well, language carries culture, and proverbs carry wisdom. IgiOwe is my small contribution to preserving Yoruba knowledge in a way that is modern, searchable, and accessible to anyone who wants to learn or reconnect with the depth of our expressions. For me, this project is more than code. It is culture meeting technology.

Yesterday, I noticed my AC gas has finished and you know how difficult to live without AC in this heat, I called the man that usually used fix it for me but I was unable to get through. Luckily, someone connected me to @wrkmanHQ that they have qualified AC repairers who can get it done as soon as possible. I was surprised by how swift they responded to my message and get the work done.
This is the type of App we need nowadays and I am surprised that they offer other services too, now I can get a painter to repaint my apartment anytime 😊
