This is a newly granted Dublin project that caught our eye. Firstly, as it’s beside us on Ormond Quay Upper on the Liffey. But secondly, as it’s such a rare example of a well-considered, thoughtfully designed mixed-use refurbishment of a type once common in Dublin in the 000s 🧵

The fire at the Antrim Arms is not an isolated incident.
It follows a clear, repeated pattern:
Vacant → neglected → vulnerable → burnt. 🧵
On this, the shortest day, let us take a moment to celebrate the indigenous architecture that directly connects us with the incredible monuments of our distant past.
These humble little houses are irreplaceable, and surely worthy of inclusion in our solstice celebrations.
As we prepare to close our doors for most of 2026, take the very last chance to visit 18 Ormond Quay Upper this Thursday 18 December for self-guided visits. From 1pm to 7.30pm enjoy the festive atmosphere of traditionally presented 1840s rooms with staff on hand for questions 🧵

A heritage group has called for greater protection of Northern Ireland’s buildings as a former unlisted mill in Dunmurry could be demolished following recent planning permission approval.
Permission was granted for plans to turn the former mill site on Upper Dunmurry lane into 32 apartments at a Belfast City Council (BCC) committee meeting last month.

Surviving two-storey thatched dwellings are rare in Ireland and to my knowledge this is the only one that adheres to the post-Famine trend whereby comfortable farmers increasingly constructed two-storey farmhouses with a formal window + door arrangement.
