The meeting held today between the newly elected Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia and representatives of the opposition is a highly encouraging and constructive development.

Engaging in dialogue, acknowledging existing differences, and seeking common ground are essential steps toward building a more inclusive, effective, and cooperative parliamentary institution.

Political differences are a natural part of democratic life, and diverse political perspectives should not become obstacles to constructive engagement. What is most important is to foster a culture of mutual respect, open dialogue, and political tolerance, while ensuring that different views are given due consideration.

A Parliament that accommodates diverse perspectives and encourages cooperation can play a vital role in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting political stability, and advancing the broader national interest of Somalia.

Exactly three months after the end of the HSM’s mandate, data confirms a sharp decline in national economic growth, household purchasing power, and business profitability.

Conversely, there has been a dramatic rise in unemployment, inflation, poverty, and the number of IDPs, all while members of the former Presidents’ regime have enriched themselves through the exploitation of public assets and the land grabbing of public property.

OFFICIAL MOURNING OR PERSONAL POLITICAL SIGNALING? SOMALIA’S TRIBUTE TO QATAR EXAMINED

In Somalia, only the president typically makes the decision to declare official mourning and lower the national flag to half-mast. There is no active written formal national procedure to deal such situation. For this instance, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ordered this gesture following the death of the former Emir of Qatar. While this may reflect his personal relationship with the current Qatari leadership, it is important to distinguish this from the genuine and widespread ties between the people of the two countries.

At least six other countries—Somalia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and India—have also observed similar mourning measures. However, Somalia is not generally considered among Qatar’s closest international partners

Some countries are widely known for their strong people-to-people relations, characterized by deep cultural, historical, familial, and social bonds among their citizens. Common examples include the United States and the United Kingdom, Germany and France, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, and Greece and Serbia.

In contrast, there is little evidence of a similar relationship between the people of Somalia and Qatar. Therefore, any official initiatives should be understood within this context, rather than as a reflection of public opinion. I believe such actions are linked to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s project - such as funding his re-election, and a scheme like “one vote per person” where Qatar appears detached from the views of ordinary Somalis.

Somalia’s future leaders should remain respectful to the public opinion and ensure that symbolic decisions align with the priorities and views of their citizens.

BREAKING: A vehicle owned by @KamalGutale, the permanent secretary in @SomaliPM, was used to transport a defecting soldier from the security detail of Ahmed Madobe, president of Jubaland, who was carrying a PKM machine gun, Shabelle Media reported.

CCTV footage from the presidential compound allegedly shows the vehicle picking up the soldier on the day opposition-government talks opened.

Shabelle reported that contacts between the soldier and members of the @SomaliPM who allegedly facilitated his defection began earlier.

The weapon has since been returned to Jubaland authorities. The driver and another individual in the vehicle are being detained in connection with the case.

I would like to join my fellow Somali people to celebrate the rise in the value and recognition of the Somali passport on the global stage.

From a passport ranked 111 in 2021, our Somali passport has climbed to 96th today, improving by 15 places. Today, we do not just hold a passport. We hold a passport that opens doors, builds connections, and signals to the world: Somalia is back.

This reflects the growing confidence of the world in Somalia’s progress, stability, governance, and international standing.

Today, Somali citizens can travel to nearly 40 countries with visa-free access, or visas on arrival, a tangible benefit that touches the lives of every citizen, from students to businesspeople, from families to professionals.

Many of our international partners have already extended visa-free entry to holders of the Somali diplomatic passport, and we remain optimistic that, in the near future, this privilege will be expanded to all our citizens.

Somalia will continue to play an active role in advancing sustainable development, expanding trade, creating jobs, and improving the living standards of East African citizens.

It is a milestone for the Somali people and for every citizen who has never lost hope in this country.

Prime Minister @HamzaAbdiBarre on Tuesday welcomed a #UK delegation led by Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders, praising the UK for its support on key national achievements, including the lifting of the arms embargo and Somalia’s return to the UN Human Rights Council. He also underscored the establishment of #Somalia’s Independent Human Rights Commission as the UK envoy lauded progress and received a certificate of appreciation for the UK’s continued partnership.

Mogadishu Airport and Visa Payments for Foreign Passport Holders

On october 5th 2025, I arrived at Mogadishu Airport, as a Somali foreign passport holder, I wanted to pay a visa fee. At the immigration desk, instead of directing me to the official system, the officer handed me a slip with a personal number and asked me to transfer the money there.

I refused and requested to pay through official government numbers . The officer insisted the money would still reach immigration, but the process seemed irregular and raised concerns of corruption. When i asked him to offcial number bank or immigration number he became frustrated.!

I then asked for the official online link to apply and pay directly, but the system was not working. After waiting for more than an hour, I agreed to pay in cash but i mase sure to get official receipt , the officer only stamped my passport with an entry, without givin me a visa. When I asked about my visa, he told me to apply online later. Remember even though I had already paid. I told that paying again through the online system would mean paying twice. after I insisted strongly did he finally give me both the visa and an official receipt.

I strongly recommend that the Somali government establish a transparent and secure visa payment system, either through a designated government bank account or a fully functional online platform to prevent corruption and protect the rights of foreign travelers.
