Njeru Rugby Club 🏉

A community rugby club in Njeru for girls and boys from 6 years old, as well as adults. Newcomers are welcome!

[𝗛𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 @HipposFans]

🇺🇬 This is the only club we’ve seen in the regional competitions that has consistently tracked and published its players’ statistics, with records dating back to at least 2024.

William Onen has been a remarkably consistent performer, leading the club in tries for multiple seasons. He was also their top points scorer until this year, when the emerging Junior Sanyu overtook him.

It’s no surprise that Junior Sanyu was crowned the Eastern Region 7s Overall MVP. He’s a special talent, and one the wider rugby community should definitely be keeping an eye on.

His potential has been evident for years. At the 2021 Jinja Age Grade 7s hosted by Hippos, Junior Sanyu scored both tries and conversions for the Njeru Whirlwinds U15 side, helping them secure the silver medal after finishing runners up to Walukuba Trojans.

He sat his PLE in 2023, though it’s not yet clear which secondary school he joined.

Credit to Njeru for tracking and sharing their players’ statistics. This is exactly the kind of record keeping that helps identify, monitor, and celebrate emerging talent. It would be great to see more clubs adopt the same approach. Better still, the newly appointed district rugby coordinators and regional representatives could play a key role by gathering records and maintaining up to date profiles of players within their respective areas.

Linda Nakanjako and Junior Sanyu had the most points (tries & conversions).

Linda & Faith Nambi both had 5 tries, while William Onen had 25 tries.

If Njeru Cyclones went unbeaten at #Iganga7s (final leg of @RugbyEURA #EasternRegion7s), and took the leg silverware, how come #UgandaRugby announced Nyondo Cheetahs instead?

🇺🇬 Njeru Cyclones capped off an impressive campaign by winning the #Iganga7s, the 4th and final leg of the #EasternRegion7s Series.

Their meetings with eventual overall champions Nyondo Cheetahs across the 4 legs produced a fascinating rivalry:

Leg 1: Cheetahs 14-07 Cyclones
Leg 2: Cyclones 00-10 Cheetahs
Leg 3: Cheetahs 10-00 Cyclones
Leg 4: Cyclones 12-10 Cheetahs

Throughout the series, Nyondo Cheetahs proved to be their toughest opponents, eventually claiming the overall Eastern Region 7s title. However, Njeru Cyclones had the final say, edging the Cheetahs 12-10 in the Iganga 7s final to lift the leg trophy, believed to be the club’s first ever Eastern Region 7s leg title.

The victory saw Njeru Cyclones finish the series on 77 points, earning 2nd place overall in the Eastern Region standings.

Hurricanes lost in the semifinal to finish 3rd.

Finally! My Njeru Cyclones got over their fear of Nyondo Cheetahs and beat them today. They went unbeaten in today's Iganga 7s to emerge champions. They finished second overall in the East. I'm so proud. 🥰 Great job Bashir! Our future is bright! 🤗
